Figs are inverted flowers and technically not fruits. They require specific kind of pollination that can only come from fig wasps which are 1.5mm big. The wasps have to die inside the fruit to mature since figs cannot be pollinated by wind or normal bees. Ripe figs are not full of dead wasps and the crunchy bits in the fruit are only seeds. The fig produces an enzyme called ficain(ficin) which digests the dead wasp and the fig absorbs the nutrients to create the ripe fruits and seeds.

Ever wondered why these animals are on Kenya Airways planes? In 2021 Kenya Airways partnered with MagicalKenya to brand Kenya Airways with the Big 5.

This Kenya Airways plane carries the "Come Live the Magic" livery on both sides of the plane. Big Tim on the left was the largest African Elephant/Tusker, a true African legend. Unfortunately he died in the Amboseli National Park in 2020.

Najin and Fatu, the last two surviving Northern White Rhinos on the planet are on the right (lower picture), and are being taken care of at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. Both are females and unable to reproduce, so the sad reality is that the species will be extinct when they die, unless there is a scientific breakthrough (ref. Www.helpingrhinos.org).

𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐙𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚 𝐃𝐚𝐲! 🦓 Let’s celebrate these striped beauties today.

Did you know that even at birth, a foal’s legs are already almost as long as those of an adult? Within 20 minutes of birth, the zebra is on the run and uses this amazing ability as its primary method to evade predators!

Out of all the mammals found in Africa, the magnificent Cape buffalo is most responsible for the deaths of big game trophy hunters, when a Cape buffalo charges, they are almost impossible to bring down.

🐘The Red Elephants of Tsavo East 🐘❤🐘

Tsavo East National Park is home to a unique and awe-inspiring sight—the Red Elephants. These magnificent creatures, with their reddish-brown hue, have captivated the imagination of visitors and researchers alike. Let's delve into the fascinating world of these iconic elephants and uncover the secrets behind their distinctive coloration.

1. Natural Dust Bath
The distinctive red color of the elephants in Tsavo East is primarily due to their frequent dust baths. The park's soil contains iron-rich red dust, which the elephants enthusiastically throw onto their bodies using their trunks. As they roll around in the dust, it coats their skin, giving them a reddish appearance.

2. Soil and Mud Coating
Apart from dust, Tsavo's elephants also coat themselves in mud and soil. They use their trunks to spray water or mud onto their bodies, acting as a protective layer against the scorching sun, biting insects, and potential skin infections. The combination of red dust and mud contributes to their unique coloration.

3. Camouflage Advantage
While the exact reason for the elephants' red coloration is not fully understood, researchers suggest that it could serve as a form of camouflage in the park's reddish landscapes. The red hue helps them blend in with the surrounding vegetation, providing them with an advantage in evading predators and allowing them to move discreetly through their natural habitat.

4. Distinctive Genetics
In addition to their reddish appearance, the elephants of Tsavo East have been found to possess unique genetic characteristics. Recent studies have revealed that they exhibit distinct genetic markers compared to other elephant populations in Kenya, highlighting their genetic diversity and ecological significance.

5. Conservation Challenges
Despite their remarkable features, the Red Elephants of Tsavo East face various conservation challenges. Habitat loss, human-wildlife conflicts, and poaching remain ongoing threat to their population.

A King has fallen!
Some sad news from Nairobi National Park... Kitili, the legendary one-eyed king of Nairobi National Park was found dead after a fight with other lions.
