Mpox causes signs and symptoms which usually begin within a week but can start 1–21 days after exposure. Symptoms typically last 2–4 weeks but may last longer in someone with a weakened immune system.

The preferred lab test for mpox is detection of viral DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The best diagnostic specimens are taken directly from the rash – skin, fluid or crusts – collected by vigorous swabbing. In the absence of skin lesions, testing can be done using swabs of the throat or a**s. Testing blood is not recommended. Antibody detection methods may not be useful as they do not distinguish between different orthopoxviruses.

There are four major blood groups determined by the presence or absence of two antigens, A and B, on the surface of red blood cells. In addition to the A and B antigens, there is a protein called the Rh factor, which can be either present (+) or absent (–), creating the 8 most common blood types (A+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+, AB-).

What are the different types of bacterial culture tests?

Bacteria can be sampled from various areas of your body or substances inside your body, depending on the type of infection suspected. The different types are:

• Blood culture: A blood culture checks for systemic infection throughout your entire body, such as sepsis. A healthcare provider collects the blood sample from a vein, usually in your arm. Blood cultures are rarely done on people who aren’t staying in the hospital (outpatients) and should be repeated at regular intervals.

• Cerebrovascular fluid (CSF) culture: A CSF culture tests a sample of the fluid that protects the spine. A healthcare provider inserts a needle into a space between two vertebrae in your spine to get the sample. This procedure is called a spinal tap (lumbar puncture).

• Stool culture: A stool culture tests p**p for an infection in your digestive tract. A healthcare provider will ask you to p**p into a sterile cup that’s then sealed and sent to a lab.

• Throat culture: A throat culture tests for infection in your throat like strep throat. A healthcare provider swabs the back of your throat for a sample of cells.

• Sputum culture: If your provider suspects an infection deep in your lungs, they may run tests on sputum. Sputum is thick mucus that comes from deep in your lungs. It’s also called phlegm. A healthcare provider will ask you to cough up sputum.

• Urine culture: A urine culture tests p*e to help diagnose infection in the urinary tract, including the kidneys. A healthcare provider will ask you to clean your ge****ls then p*e directly into a small, sterile cup. The cup is then sealed and sent to the lab. In the hospital, a urine sample may be collected through a catheter. A catheter is a thin tube inserted into the urethra (the tube where urine exits the body).

• Wound culture: If you have a cut or burn that might be infected, you may need a wound culture, also called a skin culture. A healthcare provider will use a syringe to take a sample of fluid or pus from the wound, or a piece of tissue is sent to the lab.

Your heart releases cardiac enzymes (cardiac biomarkers) when there’s heart damage or stress due to low oxygen.

Troponin and creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) levels rise after a heart attack. Elevated heart enzyme levels can also indicate acute coronary syndrome or ischemia.

Cardiac enzymes test is used to
*Screen for heart damage and other problems.
*Diagnose heart conditions that cause symptoms such as chest pain, angina and shortness of breath.
*Monitor how well heart is
*medications and heart surgery work.

How is ovarian cancer usually diagnosed?

The tests used most often (in addition to a complete pelvic exam) to screen for ovarian cancer are transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) and the CA-125 blood test.

A tissue biopsy is used to confirm an ovarian cancer diagnosis. But an initial ovarian cancer diagnosis is often found based on symptoms, such as bloating, fatigue, weight loss, abdominal distention, pelvic pain and feeling full quickly.

Unfortunately, by the time most patients with ovarian cancer see a doctor, 70% to 80% are already at stage III or IV. That’s because the symptoms of ovarian cancer are so vague, and patients often experience them for months before seeking help.

A coagulation profile (coags) includes INR, APTT, platelets and fibrinogen. It is a screening test for abnormal blood clotting because it examines the factors most often associated with a bleeding problem.

Coagulation factors are proteins in your blood. They help form blood clots to stop bleeding when you have injury. These proteins are also called clotting factors.

Symptoms that may be from a problem with clotting factors:

• Heavy bleeding that doesn't stop with pressure after an injury, dental procedure, or surgery
• Frequent nosebleeds that start on their own
• Blood in urine (p*e) or stool (p**p)
• Frequent, large bruises or tiny red or brown spots under the skin
• Redness, swelling, pain, or stiffness from bleeding into muscles or joints
• Heavy menstrual periods
• Swelling, redness, warmth, and pain in your arms or legs which may be from a clot
• Trouble breathing from a clot that's traveled to your lung
• Nausea

A blood culture is a test that checks for foreign invaders like bacteria, yeast, and other microorganisms in your blood. Having these pathogens in your bloodstream can be a sign of a blood infection, a condition known as bacteremia.

Blood culture and sensitivity tests are fundamental diagnostic tools which helps in the accurate diagnosis and timely treatment of serious bloodstream infections. Your doctor might recommend the test to diagnose the blood infection or other medical conditions involving microorganisms in the blood.

27/02/2024

Cortisol is a steroid hormone made by your adrenal glands. It helps your body respond to stress, regulate blood sugar, and fight infections. In most people, cortisol levels are highest in the morning when they wake up and lowest around midnight. Your body also pumps out excess cortisol when you're anxious or under intense stress, which can affect your health if the levels stay too high for too long. If your cortisol levels are too high or too low, you may have a condition that needs treatment.

A high cortisol level could be a sign of Cushing syndrome. Symptoms of Cushing syndrome include:
• Obesity, especially in the torso, face, and neck, with thinner arms and legs
• Round face
• Fatty hump at the base of the neck and/or between the shoulders
• High blood pressure
• High blood sugar
• Thin skin that bruises easily
• Pink or purple stretch marks on the stomach, breast, hips, thighs, or buttocks
• Muscle weakness
• Osteoporosis
• Acne
• For women, irregular menstrual periods and excess hair on the face and chest

Too little cortisol could be a sign of Addison disease, also called primary adrenal insufficiency. It could also be a sign of another problem with your adrenal glands. This may cause these symptoms:
• Weight loss
• Muscle and joint pain
• Extreme, long-lasting tiredness (fatigue)
• Low blood pressure
• Belly pain
• Nausea or vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Diarrhea
• Dark patches of skin
• Irritability and depression
• For women, decreased armpit and p***c hair and decreased sexual desire
