- John Burdett, Director of Africa Exclusive
Karibu Kenya Accommodation Guide, the new comprehensive guidebook to Kenya, was launched in Kenya in February 2013. The
guidebook has detailed information on over 850 camps, lodges, hotels, resorts and bandas all over the country. The Kenya Tourist Board (KTB), the Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF) and the Kenya Professional Safari Guide Association (KPSGA) have all endorsed Karibu Kenya Accommodation Guide. The introduction covers the history, geography, climate, peoples, attractions and annual cultural festivals of Kenya, as well as the countryβs infrastructure, banking, communications, transport and medical facilities. It highlights responsible tourism and the wildlife code, and gives information on the Kenyan associations that regulate and certify tourist facilities. Each chapter focuses on a region, starting with a photograph and a summary of what the region comprises, including information on where to go and what to do there. It gives information on the regionβs national parks, reserves and conservancies, and the activities and facilities on offer in each. The maps of the regions detail, not only the geographical features and main roads, but also where every accommodation facility listed in the book is situated. A photo illustrates each camp, lodge, hotel, resort and banda. Information is given on how to book with the hotel directly, its website, location, rates, nearest airstrip and payment options. A 200-word write up about every hotel is followed by icons detailing what each place offers, including safari activities, water sports, dining option, eco-certification, community development projects, hotel amenities and services. Professional photographs from around Kenya enhance the book, showing the highlights of each region. The guidebook is colour-coded by region and has a fully inclusive index, making it clear and easy to use. The author, Tamara Britten, spent two years travelling around Kenya, collecting information about what each region of the country offers, and researching and writing about the accommodation facilities available in each. Tamara has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia (UEA). Her written work has won the Curtis Brown Award for Prose Fiction, attained second place in the Yeovil Short Story Competition and been shortlisted for the Hookline Novel Competition. Tamara has managed safari camps and mobile tented safaris in both Kenya and Namibia. Munich Design formatted and designed the guidebook. Sokomoto Images, Andrew Nightingale and Yellow Wings Aviation all contributed photographs. Karibu Kenya Accommodation Guide is available direct from the author.
