As we close our workshop today, young voices have rang strong and clear. In groups, participants have shared their unique insights and solutions to tackle HIV stigma, presenting them in a powerful plenary session.

Their voices have shaped our strategy and strengthened our vision for a stigma-free future. We can make it happen, let’s keep pushing forward.

There's a young boy in school living with HIV who faced a heart-wrenching experience during a dormitory search. The prefects found his ART medication, mistook it for 'drugs,' and threw it away. This led him down a difficult road, battling not only stigma but also mental health challenges as he struggled to process the trauma.

There is the importance of dignity, understanding, and safe spaces for all children, especially those living with HIV. Imagine if only sensitized teachers and matrons conducted these searches, respecting students' dignity and privacy. Protecting the privacy and dignity of children isn’t just a rule, it’s a responsibility we owe to them. Meet Jerop, a young advocate from Nairobi, who knows firsthand that fighting HIV stigma goes beyond just sharing basic information. For her, it's not enough to simply be told about her rights or reminded of the stigma that exists. She needs real, in-depth conversations, things like understanding what U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) truly means, and how it impacts her life and the lives of others living with HIV.

Jerop believes young people deserve more than surface-level information; they need comprehensive insights and safe spaces like support groups, where diverse voices can come together and share openly without judgment. For her and so many others, these spaces represent hope, strength, and the chance to feel understood in a world that too often leaves them isolated.

Jerop’s story reminds us powerfully that combating stigma means meeting young people where they are, with the depth and respect they deserve. Global Network of People living with HIV (GNP+) Ambassador for Youth and Adolescent Rep Health Programme - Ayarhep Frontline AIDS Y+Kenya
