ZANZIBAR HOLIDAYS
Zanzibar is magical: the spice-scented, quintessential Indian Ocean idyll. Tropical, turquoise waters lap miles of palm-fringed, sandy beaches. For hundreds of years, traders and travellers have eulogised about Zanzibar’s intoxicating aroma of spices, its beautiful beaches and the bustle of its Moorish capital, Stone Town. It’s name alone - as evocative as Timbuktu, Casablanca or Kilimanjaro - is alluring enough for many to dream of visiting.
Just a short hop across the water from mainland Tanzania - of which Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part - is this lush array of islands. It’s impossible not to be enchanted as you approach from the air: clear, sparkling waters, darkened only by patch reefs, and punctuated by the billowing triangular, white sails of passing dhows.

What is the Great Migration?

Arguably East Africa’s most spectacular natural phenomenon, the Great Migration is a continuous journey of over 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra.

There is no start and finish to this migration, and instead it is an ongoing cycle through six different conservation areas, game reserves, and national parks throughout the year.

At the start of the year you’ll find the migration in the Ngorogoro conservation area, before the animals head south to the southern Serengeti, bordering Maswa Game Reserve, for calving season between February and March.

In April and May, the wildebeest and zebra start north, heading through the western sector of the Serengeti and into the Grumeti Game Reserve throughout June and July.

By early August, they have reached the northern Serengeti. This is their last port of call before crossing into Kenya and the Masai Mara game reserve for the rest of August through to October, where they will re-cross the Mara River and begin the journey back south down to the Ngorogoro.

Experience the Maasai Culture as you Visit Africa
The Maasai Tribe
The Maasai are an indigenous ethnic group in Africa of semi-nomadic people settled in Kenya and northern Tanzania. Due to their distinct traditions, customs and dress and their residence near the many national game parks of East Africa, the Maasai are among the foremost African ethnic groups and are known internationally because of their links to the national parks and reserves.

Language - Maa, a language derived from Nilo-Saharan, related to Dinka and Nuer. They also speak the official languages of Tanzania and Kenya. Swahili and English.

Population - The Maasai population is now estimated 900 000

Although the Kenyan and Tanzanian governments have established programs to encourage the Maasai to leave behind their traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle, the Maasai people have carried on their age-old customs. However this is changing, albeit slowly.

AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
“Home of the African Elephant”
Crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, the Amboseli National Parks is one of Kenya's most popular parks. The name "Amboseli" comes from a Maasai word meaning "salty dust", and it is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close. Nature lovers can explore five different habitats here ranging from the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli, wetlands with sulphur springs, the savannah and woodlands. They can also visit the local Maasai community who live around the park and experience their authentic culture.

St. Mary of Zion
This is the most sacred of shrines in the whole of Ethiopia, not only does St. Mary's host the Ark of the Covenant but also offers up an impressive history dating back some 1700 years.

Around 300 AD the first St. Mary of Zion was built in the town of Axum by the first and largest Christian Kingdom outside of the Roman Empire. The church itself has been rebuilt several times over the past 1700 odd years, with the latest version having been finished in 1964.

Adjoining the main church are two small Chapels, it is in one of these that the Ark of the Covenant is kept. The monk who guards the Ark is appointed for life, he is confined to the Chapel and may never leave. No one is allowed in here but put those Indiana Jones outfits on in any case.

Wondering around the church grounds and watching all the pilgrims is really special, but walking through the main church is something else. When entering the main church there is a feeling of peace and safety.

Welcome to Namibia the land that time forgot
Located on the western edge of Namibia, the landscape at Dead Vlei looks like a surrealist painting, with its starkly contrasting red-orange sand dunes set behind apocalyptic trees and the dried white clay pan of the desert floor.Deadvlei is a white clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia. Also written DeadVlei or Dead Vlei, its name means "dead marsh".
The trees began to grow when the area was flooded by a nearby river. In later centuries, however, newly formed sand dunes cut off the water supply. Though the trees here are around 900 years old, they haven't yet decomposed due to the extreme dryness of the climate — leaving them intact in all their bleak, barren beauty.

Chaz Tours and Travel offers travelers a chance to experience a wild, untouched region Africa seen by very few explorers. This vast country is covered with dramatic landscapes, ancient intact cultures, and amazing game viewing opportunities. It is an 'ageless land,' visible through the heritage of rock art created by stone-age artists and geological attractions such as the petrified forest of Khorixas where fossilized tree trunks have lain for over 280 million years. Visit the ship remains on the Skeleton Coast, track Rhinos on foot in the Palmwag Concession, or rev an ATV on the sand dunes in Sossusvlei. However you choose to spend your time, Chaz Tours and Travel our safari experts will help you find the perfect trip for your particular interests, needs, and budget.

Visit the Skeleton Coast, Namibia

The waters off Namibia’s northern coast are notorious for their strong currents, treacherous fog and shifting sandbanks, which have seen the demise of many ships, whales and other marine creatures over the centuries. The golden beaches here are littered with bleached whale bones and the skeletal remains of unlucky vessels, so the area became known as the Skeleton Coast or, for the indigenous San People, ‘the land God made in anger’.

What you need to know before travelling from South Africa to Namibia
Namibia is open for international travel and is welcoming all nationals into the country under the conditions that they follow protocol upon arrival. To help guide the country’s international tourism revival initiative, Namibia announced new healthprotocols that went into action on 1 September 2020.

Visitors must present their full itinerary and a negative COVID-19 PCR test result conducted within 7 days of arriving. Health screening and temperature testing are vital upon arrival too. Visitors with a PCR test older than 7 days will be required to take a coronavirus test and quarantine for 14 days at their own cost.

Before departing Namibia, a negative COVID-19 test will be conducted and a certificate will be issued out to those who need it to enter their country.

Ethiopian Airlines, Lufthansa, Air Namibia, Eurowings and Qatar Airways have scheduled flights from South Africa to Namibia. In a press release by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism it is stated that Namibia has obtained all of the necessary approvals to implement the revised National Parks entrance fees and the introduction of the conservation fees with effect from 1 April 2021.

The newly revised fees range from N$20 – N$700 all of which are non-refundable and not transferable. All fees are valid for 24 hours from the time you enter the park.

‘Given that Namibia’s park entrance fees are currently one of the lowest in the SADC Region and given the shortfall in resources needed to conserve wildlife and maintain infrastructure in national parks, the Ministry is introducing payment of a conservation fee charged to all visitors to national parks and game parks in addition to the new entrance fees,’ said Spokesperson, Romeo Muyunda.

It is said that the combined conservation fee and entrance fee is affordable and is based on a market related price.

Romeo mentioned that the conservation fee will go towards the Game Product Trust Fund, and will be used for the maintenance of infrastructure in national parks and game parks.

Namibia: the Lure of the Desert

Mostly known for its incredible landscape photography opportunities, Namibia is also an excellent destination for wildlife photography. The country’s highlight, wildlife-wise, is Etosha National Park: a 20,000 square kilometre park in the north of the country.Like most of the rest of Namibia, Etosha is arid and desert-like, and it has a huge salt pan in its centre. Though the area is seemingly inhospitable, a string of water holes on the edge of the salt pan are a major attraction for wildlife, and animals visit them by the hundreds. This makes it exceptionally easy to find your photographic subjects: you can simply park by the waterholes and wildlife spotting is guaranteed. You can expect to see, and photograph, lions, elephants, springbok, zebra, and gemsbok, to name a few.

Kenya & Tanzania: the Masai Mara and the Serengeti

Think classic African safari, and you’re probably picturing the Serengeti or the Masai Mara. An open savannah dotted with lions, elephants, and the occasional acacia tree. For once, the cliché lives up to its expectations.

With its stunning tableaus and great abundance of wildlife, this area is a perfect canvas for wildlife photography. You can expect a great variety of animals, too: big cats, elephants, buffalo, zebra, and a great range of antelope can all be easily be spotted in the open savannah. Undoubtably a highlight of the Mara and Serengeti is the annual Great Migration: a wildlife spectacle unlike any other. Every year, between July and October, over a million wildebeest, zebra, and antelope migrate over the plains in search of more lush vegetation. The sight of this mass movement is breathtaking, with thundering waves of animals moving past your vehicle.

Whilst there is safety in numbers, many predators take their opportunity by grabbing what they can. It’s an unforgettable sight that is rightly one of the most sought-after wildlife events by photographers.

High Sunrise at Namibia’s Dune 45
The world’s tallest sand dunes are in the Namibian desert — and it was here, at Dune 45, that you would see heaven and earth collide with the rising sun. The Namib-Naukluft National Park is the largest ecological preserve in Africa measuring about 19,300 square miles (50,000 km²). It is a picture of beauty and elegance: golden-red sands shining down upon the barren earth below. In its center beckons a magical oasis: Sossusvlei.

Three best locations in Kenya for an African safari

Kenya, located in the heart of East Africa is one of the more well-known countries in Africa largely due to a strategic location, vibrant economy, highly literate population, and being a peaceful democracy which also happens to be the headquarters for several United Nations agencies.

On the tourism front, Kenya is also one of the best places for a vacation, and an African Safari in Kenya is generally considered one of the most sought-after travel experiences in the world, rightfully making it on to many travel bucket lists around the world. Kenya's popularity as a premier travel destination is well deserved, not least due to the stunning landscapes and picturesque scenery, pleasant year-round climate free of hot summers or cold winters, the amazing wildlife that is arguably the best collection of wild animals anywhere on the planet and last but not least, the friendly and welcoming Kenya people who so greatly add to the overall experience of traveling to this country. Despite being a highly rated African safari destination, Kenya remains an affordable tourist destination, especially when compared to other options such as Safari locations in Southern Africa.

Most visitors to Kenya are keen on knowing about the best Safari destinations in the country which are ideal for spotting the so-called “Big Five animals“, namely Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Buffalo, and Elephant. Below is our list of the most rewarding locations for an African Safari tour in Kenya.

1.Masai Mara National Reserve

Acclaimed as one of the best wildlife reserves in Kenya and indeed the world, Masai Mara National Reserve is known not only for the phenomenal annual Great Wildebeest Migration but also for having some of the highest concentration of the big game animals mentioned above. The national reserve is located in southwest Kenya and is a vast expanse of gently rolling grass-covered African savannah plains measuring 1510 square kilometers in area and bordering the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the south.

Masai Mara National Reserve is surrounded by various wildlife conservancies covering the area mainly to the north and east of the main national reserve which is itself managed by the Narok county government. Most of these conservancies have camps and lodges located inside their respective boundaries as can be seen in this Map of Masai Mara which also indicates the location of most camps and lodges situated both inside the main Reserve and in the surrounding conservancy areas as well as the location of the various airstrips and main entry gates.

2. Amboseli National Park

Amboseli is one of the most popular National Parks in Kenya in pure visitor numbers. The park is well known for its rich wildlife, particularly the prolific herds of elephants. Amboseli is also famed for the glorious views of Mount Kilimanjaro which is located just across the border in Tanzania but is physically close enough to Amboseli to afford visitors some amazing views. Besides the diverse wildlife, the other attraction of the park includes the opportunity to meet and experience the authentic culture of the local Maasai people who live around the park.

The park is home to over 80 mammals and 400 bird species, with most of the Safari animals being present in the park with the exception of Rhinos. The sunnier climate and clearer skies from December to March are especially suitable for capturing the best photos of Kilimanjaro. Amboseli National Park is just over four hours by road from Nairobi. There is also a daily flight from Nairobi to the park which is less than an hour in duration.

3. Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Located north of Nairobi and covering over 350 square kilometers, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a mix of grass plains, wooded grasslands, and evergreen thickets situated at the foothills of Aberdares and the snow-capped Mt. Kenya. The conservancy boasts the largest black rhino in East Africa, and in 2013 reached a population milestone of 100 black rhinos. It also houses the two remaining northern white rhinos in the world. The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is situated here and provides a haven for orphaned, abandoned, and rescued chimpanzees. It is the only place in Kenya where these great apes can be seen.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to the “big five” among a large selection of other African animals. Visit this location during your African Safari to see the endangered black and white rhinos, leopards, lions, cape buffalos, and large elephants, even as you revel in the stunning views of the land. The safari game drives around the conservancy will include a visit to the Chimpanzees sanctuary as well.

With scheduled departure dates throughout the year, our tour itineraries have been tried, tested and perfected over many years and include everything in one affordable price from accommodation, professional guides, meals, activities, and park fees.
