Timkat/Epiphany Day- 20th January.

Timkat is an Amharic word directly translating to Baptism.It's an important day in the Ethiopian calender that celebrated the baptism of Jesus in River Jordan.

In the 17th Century, an Ethiopian emporor called Fasilides, from the Lineage of Solomon (and queen of Sheba) founded a city, which he made his headquarters and named it Gondar. He built a castle and about 2 kms from the castle built a pool(The pictures above) where he would go for afternoon swims. The pool was fed water through canals, but nowadays it's empty through most of the year due to sanitation.

The pool only comes alive on the day of Timkat when the waters come back in and people are baptized and it's a whole festival all together.
