World wetlands day, celebrated every year on the 2nd of February, seeks to create awareness on the connection between wetland conservation and a sustainable future.
Wetlands are critical ecosystems for supporting biodiversity, improving livelihoods and enhancing climate resilience.
1. Climate Mitigation: Wetlands are powerful carbon sinks contain the highest carbon density of all terrestrial ecosystems. They sequester carbon up to 10 times more than forests. Wetlands also mitigate areas and communities from the impact of storms and floods.
2. Livelihoods: Over billion people depend on wetlands for their livelihood. Wetlands are a natural source of food, water and fuel.
3. Biodiversity Hotspots: Wetlands provide key habitat to diverse wildlife species including plants, birds, reptiles, grazers and insects.
