While Mt. Kilimanjaro proudly stands in Tanzania, the most breathtaking vistas of Africa’s highest peak are found in the enchanting Amboseli National Park. I can’t help but admire leopards. For me, wildlife viewing has always been about more than just ticking off the Big Five. When I’m in the bush, I take great joy in observing a variety of animals in their natural habitats. While I appreciate any wildlife encounter, spotting the elusive leopard sends my adrenaline soaring and gives me goosebumps.

Leopards are solitary, well-camouflaged, and agile hunters, making them the most resilient of the big cats. They thrive in diverse environments, from rainforests to deserts and even near urban areas. Although they are widespread, leopards can be notoriously difficult to find, except in select locations where they have become habituated to humans.

One of the best places to see leopards in Africa is the Masai Mara National Reserve, renowned for excellent sightings of all the big cats. The open savannah is particularly rewarding for spotting cheetahs and lions, but leopards can also be found here. Female leopards often hide their cubs among the kopjes (rocky outcrops), and curious young ones can sometimes be seen playing around the rocks while waiting for their mother to return from a hunting trip.

Amboseli National Park may not have as many lodges and tented camps as the Masai Mara National Reserve, but it still offers numerous outstanding options. Only three lodges and camps are located within the national park's boundaries. The rest are situated outside the eastern Kimana Gate or on Maasai-run conservancies and group ranches that surround the reserve to the north and east. Each location has its unique advantages, and all of the lodges and tented camps are excellent.

One of the best options inside the park is Ol Tukai, which offers a central location and beautiful accommodations. The lodge features spacious rooms, expansive lawns, and stunning views of Kilimanjaro. You might find yourself swimming in the pool or enjoying a meal on the open terrace while elephants wander by or, if you're lucky, witnessing a cheetah darting across the horizon in pursuit of prey. Staying inside the park allows you to start your game drive each morning while those staying outside are still waiting to enter.

Many of its parks are home to at least four and in some cases all five, of these sought-after animals. Many people consider the leopard to be the most elusive of the big cats to spot on safari. However, in reality, cheetahs can be even more challenging to locate due to their lower population numbers. Regular sightings of cheetahs tend to be sporadic and localized, as they are found primarily in a few regions where the habitat and predator pressures are most favourable.

Cheetah sightings are more frequent in Masai Mara National Reserve and the surrounding conservancies, such as Olare Orok, Mara North, and Naboisho, as well as in Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania. The grasslands of the Mara and Serengeti provide ideal habitats for cheetahs.
