Nakuru County Tourism Association led by the Chairman Mr. David Mwangi held a stakeholders end-year party at the Royal Garden Resort in Kiamunyi.

Members were treated to a fun-filled event; together with their families, in celebration of the Association bringing together the interest of industry stakeholders in the tourism and hospitality sectors in Nakuru County.

Gracing the occasion as chief guests was Nakuru County Government - Official Deputy Governor Hon. David Kones, the Chief Officer Tourism - John Koech and Chief Officer Sports - Pastor Alex Maina, alongside other County officials.

Also present was KWS officials from Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya Association of Manufacturers, and Tourism Fund.

Nakuru County Government - Official through the Directorate of Tourism and Culture led by the CECM - Stephen Kuria Muiruri has launched a destination marketing campaign dubbed in partnership with NaxCity Kenya.

Efforts towards unpacking, packaging and documenting over 30 tourism sites in the County are underway even as plans to establish a marketing board take shape.

The media launch held at Sarova Woodlands Hotel & Spa was attended by industry stakeholders from Tour Operators, Hoteliers and Business owners.

The campaign will see to it that Nakuru becomes a premium tourism destination in Kenya.

The Women Economic Empowerment Hub at Kenyatta University, in collaboration with the Global Tourism Resilience Centre - Eastern Africa, held a consultative meeting with officials from Nakuru County Government - Official department of Tourism, together with industry partners at Taidys Suites in Nakuru on 28th November, 2024.

Professor (Dr) Leah Wanjama took the team through the Draft National Tourism Policy, whose framework is to be adopted in formulating Nakuru County tourism policy. Dr. Susan Okeri from the school of Business, Economics and Tourism at Kenyatta University, shared insights on key aspects of tourism policy development; including the responsibilities of County Governments in local tourism, and Nakuru County’s unique position as a tourism destination. The team explored steps necessary for creating a comprehensive and effective tourism policy for Nakuru County that will enable implementation through external stakeholders and tourism bodies, both locally and internationally.

Nakuru County Tourism Officer – John Macharia commended the efforts taken by Kenyatta University through their partners in formulating the policy guideline, and cited that the Directorate will embark on drafting the County policy. He added that Nakuru County is a hotbed for Tourism in Kenya and immediate steps towards transforming tourism to be competitive and sustainable is paramount for the County.

Nakuru Tourism Association Vice Chairman - John Koech sensitized the need for resource mobilization through the County and partners for the implementation of Tourism activations for Nakuru that remain dormant.

Nakuru County Hospitality and Tourism marketing partner – NaxCity Kenya through the Executive Director Ms. Catherine Kanyi, echoed Mr. Macharia by highlighting steps taken towards tourism marketing which will see Nakuru being on the National map as a premium tourism destination. This includes the launch of Nakuru destination marketing Campaign dubbed TEMBEA NAKURU set to flag-off on 5th December 2024. Other activities will follow to compliment the campaign such as Nakuru Culture Festival, Trade Expo and niche Hospitality related events.

Professor Leah lauded the move and promised to support with stakeholder engagements for resource mobilization to support with implementation once the County policy is in place.

Also present was the Great Rift Association of Tour Operators (GRATO), Nakuru Box, Lake Nakuru Lodges and Himaya Garden representatives.

Nakuru County’s Department of Tourism and Culture was honored to be part of the unveiling of the North Rift Tourism circuit for 2024/27 by the Kenya Tourism Board led by the CEO madam June Chepkemei, during the stakeholder forum held at Eka Hotel – Eldoret on 24th October, 2024.

The forum brought together key stakeholders from the sector;
Tourism Promotion Fund | Tourism Fund | Tourism Research Institute | Tourism Regulatory Authority | KICC_KENYA | Kenya Wildlife Service and notable North Rift County officers.

Present from the Directorate was the Director of Culture and Tourism (Nakuru County) - Mr. Eric Muriuki who commended KTB’s efforts towards promotion of Kenya as a premium Tourism destination. He also emphasized the need for Counties involvement by the Board to package their products for domestic consumption through MagicalKenya.

Also in attendance was the Great Rift Association of Tour Operators (GRATO) led by the Chair - Jane Karanja and the Directorate’s marketing partner NaxCity Kenya’s Executive Director – Catherine Kanyi who also represented the Hospitality sector under Lake Nakuru Group of Hotels.

Tourism Fund is undertaking a Hospitality capacity-building training that commenced on 26th August to run till 6th September, 2024 at the Rift Valley Institute of Science & Technology.

The 2-week training that has been mobilized through the Nakuru Tourism Association is offering industry skill-sets to certified and uncertified staff in the hotel sector across various departments, such as Front Office & Guest Relations, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Mixology and Pastry.

Each session provided theoretical and practical training across the departments, fundamental for upskilling the trainees for better service delivery.

Post training, the trainees will be offered course loans in various accredited Hospitality training institutions through the Tourism Revolving Fund that is set to be officially launched in September 2024. This will be an invaluable milestone for the trainees in the South Rift region.
