The Marabou Stork is one of the largest storks in the world, with a height of up to 5 feet and a wingspan of 10 feet. It has a featherless and wrinkled head, which varies in colour from pink to grey. This large and powerful bird eats mainly carrion and scraps but will opportunistically eat almost any animal matter it can swallow. They break through the thick hides of large, deceased mammals with their powerful beak. This helps to speed up the decomposition process and allows for other weaker scavengers to have access to the carcass. In addition, they are important predators, frequently seen standing on termite mounds ingesting swarming insects. Marabou Storks possess hollow leg and toe bones. In such a large bird, this is an important adaptation for flight. Join us on a captivating journey with Salen Safaris and discover the fascinating world of the Marabou Stork.

Flamingos, with their stunning pink plumage and graceful appearance, have captivated the human imagination for centuries. Their iconic pink coloration is not innate but rather a result of their diet. Flamingos feed on algae and crustaceans containing pigments called carotenoids, which enhance their feathers' pink hue. Additionally, these magnificent creatures are masters of balance. Despite their seemingly fragile physique, flamingos can stand on one leg for hours. This unusual behaviour is not only a way to conserve energy but also helps regulate their body temperature. Furthermore, their beaks are designed to filter-feed efficiently, acting like a natural sieve. By pumping water into their beaks and then expelling it, flamingos trap tiny organisms and algae, providing them with a nutrient-rich diet. Flamingos are social animals, often gathering in large flocks that can consist of thousands of individuals. These colonies serve as protection from predators and also provide a space for courtship displays. Embark on an unforgettable journey with Salen Safaris and discover the enchanting world of flamingos.

The ostrich, also known as Struthio camelus, is the largest and heaviest bird on the planet. Found mostly in the savannas and deserts of Africa, this magnificent bird possesses some truly remarkable characteristics. Firstly, it is flightless, relying on its strong legs and wings mainly for balance and speed. Able to sprint at speeds of up to 43 miles per hour, it is also known for having the fastest land speed of any bird. Moreover, the powerful kick of an ostrich is no laughing matter, as it has the strength to kill a lion. Interestingly, ostriches have the largest eyes among land animals, measuring about two inches in diameter. This, combined with their excellent eyesight, allows them to spot predators from great distances. Additionally, ostriches have remarkable immune systems, as they are rare carriers of diseases such as avian influenza. Another fascinating fact is that the ostrich's brain is smaller than either of its eyeballs. Despite this, they have proven themselves to be highly adaptable creatures, surviving and even thriving in their harsh environments. Lastly, ostriches are known for their distinct mating rituals, where the males engage in dramatic displays, such as dancing, feathers fluffing, and bill-swooping, to attract females. These extraordinary features and behaviours make the ostrich an incredibly fascinating bird. Embark on an adventure with Salen Safaris, and discover the wonders of the ostrich like never before.

African buffaloes are captivating creatures found in sub-Saharan Africa. One of the most fascinating facts about African buffaloes is their incredible strength. They can deliver a powerful charge when threatened, and they are responsible for killing more hunters in Africa than any other large animal. These formidable creatures have massive horns that can measure up to 5 feet long and are used for defense against predators and rival males during fierce battles for dominance. Unlike their American counterparts, African buffaloes have never been domesticated, making them truly wild animals. Interestingly, African buffaloes have a symbiotic relationship with oxpecker birds. These birds perch on the buffaloes' backs and feed on ticks and other parasites, benefiting from a free meal while providing the buffaloes with pest control. Despite their intimidating appearance, African buffaloes are herbivores, grazing on grasses and sometimes browsing on leaves and shrubs. These fascinating animals are a prized sighting on safari, as they contribute to the diversity and richness of Africa's wildlife. If you're intrigued by the remarkable world of buffaloes, join Salen Safaris for an unforgettable adventure where you can witness these incredible creatures in their natural habitat
