The Great Toyota War is a legend of the not-so-distant past, still whispered by the winds and etched into the sands of the Sahara. It’s a tale of brave Chadians, armed with a fleet of shiny new Toyota Land Cruisers and Hilux pickup trucks, who outsmarted and ultimately defeated Libyan forces occupying and advancing into northern Chad—despite the Libyans being equipped with state-of-the-art Soviet weaponry, including hundreds of tanks and air superiority. On paper, Chad was hopelessly outmatched—or, as the kids say, cooked.
Luckily for Chad, they had strong allies in France, who promised air support and delivered a shipment of 400 brand-new Toyota Hiluxes and Land Cruisers. With their fully kitted-out trucks, the Chadians executed a series of efficient, tactical attacks across Ouadi Doum, Lac Yoa, Kirdimi, Bir Kora, and Fada, catching the Libyans completely off guard. Libyan defenses crumbled under Chad’s diversionary tactics, leading to an astonishing victory.
Over the course of just two days, 800 Libyan troops were killed, and 86 tanks were destroyed. This marked the dawn of the Toyota Technical—efficient, reliable trucks that would not only start wars but finish them.
