The eye in the darkness. Giza, the legendary leopard of Laikipia

Meet Giza Mrembo, beautiful darkness. A young and beautiful black leopardess that I had the pleasure to spend time with earlier this year. She is one of roughly 10 melanistic leopards that they think roam the Laikipia plateau in Kenya.

I have had a desire to try and get photographs of these rare leopards since I got my hands on Will Burrard-Lucas book “The Black leopard” a few years ago. He used camera traps in his line of work which is very different to being able to work with a relaxed cat like Giza.

I sadly feel an urge to warn everyone before the end of this post with this beautiful feline. Giza is roaming three different properties, and it is just one of them that have photo workshops so choose wisely if you decide to go there. It isn’t hard to figure out which one you should use, so please stay away from any operator that isn’t working with that property.
