This is Badfoot. We always recognize his bad limp when we see him in person but also his tracks that show his distinct injured foot . He is one of 2 bosses of our local pride and he sustained his injuries to his foot long ago. We even suspect that one of his eyes is non functional. Despite his war wounds, he is actually a quite polite lion. We run into him regularly on Gamedrives and on foot. He usually makes a grunting growl and pushes on away from us when we’re walking but poses nicely like a Mara lion with vehicles.

A helicopter tour of the northern Rift Valley is beyond description for multiple exceptional reasons. The geological reasons though alone are beyond the beyond and evoke some heavy deep time appreciation all within features whose beauty are also beyond the beyond. Read more about the geological features of a heli tour to the northern rift at the link below:

A recent helicopter trip up the Rift Valley with our friends at Tropic Air was beyond my ability to verbalize or utter, especially on landing, in the moments after each flight.  The beauty exceeded the words or the brain and I struggled to make more than enthusiastic grunts and fist pumps w

What a pleasure to witness tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of Lesser Flamingos nesting on Lake Natron . Later in the season those numbers can increase to 2.5 million birds, a very large percentage of the total population of the species. The closest relatives of Flamingos are the Grebes and after that Pigeones, Doves and Sandgrouse. These species though split from the flamingos around the time of the meteor that wiped out the Non-avian Dinosaurs. When organisms exist at the end of long evolutionary trees then their own DNA is far more unique than that of organisms with closer living relatives. The Flamingoes, of which there are only 6 species worldwide, are not only the only members of their family, Phoenicopteridae but also an entire Order, the Phoenicopteriformes. This does not just signify their unique adaptions, it also points to their remarkable conservation value. A soda ash factory that was once proposed for Natron was an enormous threat to the Lesser and Greater Flamingos as well as many other important wading species. Thankfully the project was moved elsewhere but threats will always remain. Bird Flu comes to mind. Let’s celebrate Flamingos, not only their unique looks but also their very special place within Earth’s rich Biological history.

Where it all Began

Kerry and Jamie started going on safari together as kids in the 70’s. Their parents were all good friends and their mothers, Julia and Anthea grew up close to one another near Ol Kalau. The girls rode their horses to visit one another or were captains their field hockey teams. They remain good friends and neighbors to this day, still sharing their love of horses and now a couple of grandkids.

Kerry’s father Rob Glen is a renowned wildlife sculptor and was a critical ingredient in the family safaris. It was Rob who specialized in getting the Rhino’s to charge or the lions to chase the sisal rope dragged behind the land-cruiser.

Mike Christian, Jamie’s father, came from the USA to Kenya to work for the Kenyatta government after independence. It was there that he quickly became friends with Julie and Rob, and his wife-to-be, Anthea.

Kerry attended Capetown University, studying Environmental Science, while Jamie went to the University of Vermont to study Wildlife Biology. In 2003, Kerry was working in London for a Safari Agent and Jamie was working as a Biological Research Assistant.
