He might not be the ultimate safari animal for most but he should be. He is a Golden-rumped Elephant Shrew and he is as ultimate as you get. I’ve been trying for years to get a decent image of one but their speed and elusiveness always foxed me. On my last visit, over New Years, to the Arabako Sokoke Forest, just outside Watamu, I managed to get a few shots including the one above. Read more at the link below about this incredible endemic species, its wonderful forest it calls home and why more Kenya coastal tourists should stop in to see him.

In our blog you will find a recent newsletter we wrote about an eye clinic we supported for the Team Pankaj Foundation. It is a feel good Christmas Story and showcases a great lady (and Kechine’s great Aunt) who along with hundreds of other patients undertook a life-changing cataract operation. This was one of the most moving and uplifting efforts we have been lucky to be part of. Thanks Team Pankaj!!. Please read!

Well done Louise !! Such a critically important effort. We must remember that conservation is not just outdoors in the hands of wildlife managers but also in important repositories like the Kenya museum. This is so nescessary.

One of the best things about travel is learning something new, like how unique and special an Elephant Shrew is. Or how an animal so adorable can remain off most people’s radar. Elephant Shrews or Senghis as they are also called, rarely appear in safari marketing material…. But they should. A part of their cosmic story that blows minds is that these animals may have even split from the Aardvarks, Elephants, Manatees and others before the comet arrived that killed the dinosaurs 66 Million years ago! That really is unique. Our Walking safaris allow our guests a chance to not only see the ‘big five’ and the other glamorous and famous wildlife like Lions and Elephants but also the small gems hidden in the leaf litter. If you would like to read more about Elephant Shrews and their relatives follow the link below

One of the best ways to help wilddogs around Africa is by supporting conservation organisations that conduct vaccinations for local domestic dogs. These campaigns not only prevent the wilddogs from contracting dangerous viruses like distemper but they also help the local communities without the means to vaccinate their pets for rabies and other diseases.

A year ago we lost a hero and a month ago we celebrated him at a memorial in Nairobi. Rob Glen was Kerry’s dad and he was also so many other things to so many other people. Most important, he was an inspiration. Read in the link about Rob, his artistic achievements, his passion for conservation and his discovery of species.

A short tribute to Robert Glen and what he meant to us.

Where it all Began

Kerry and Jamie started going on safari together as kids in the 70’s. Their parents were all good friends and their mothers, Julia and Anthea grew up close to one another near Ol Kalau. The girls rode their horses to visit one another or were captains their field hockey teams. They remain good friends and neighbors to this day, still sharing their love of horses and now a couple of grandkids.

Kerry’s father Rob Glen is a renowned wildlife sculptor and was a critical ingredient in the family safaris. It was Rob who specialized in getting the Rhino’s to charge or the lions to chase the sisal rope dragged behind the land-cruiser.

Mike Christian, Jamie’s father, came from the USA to Kenya to work for the Kenyatta government after independence. It was there that he quickly became friends with Julie and Rob, and his wife-to-be, Anthea.

Kerry attended Capetown University, studying Environmental Science, while Jamie went to the University of Vermont to study Wildlife Biology. In 2003, Kerry was working in London for a Safari Agent and Jamie was working as a Biological Research Assistant.
