Ostrich Mating Season

Male ostriches get very territorial during the breeding season, running up to any other ostrich they happen to see; chasing them away if they are male or putting on a courtship display if it is female. The booming call we had heard is given off by the male, and is mainly heard during the breeding season.

Yesterday, KWS Northern Kenya mobile vet unit rescued an infant grevy zebra foul in Lengardae, Samburu.

The foul was discovered suckling on its mother's dead carcass, after succumbing to postpartum complications.

Thanks to this community, the foul was rescued by our team and taken to Reteti Animal Rescue Centre.

This act of kindness by the community shows the role the community plays in wildlife conservation and protection ensuring a legacy of biodiversity for future generations.

LITTLE BROTHER OF THE ELEPHANTS:
What is one of the closest living relatives of the elephant? If you said the manatee or dugong, which are both marine mammals, you would be correct. But there is another family member that is often forgotten: the hyrax (HI-racks)!
It might look a bit like a large guinea pig or rabbit with very short ears, but the hyrax is neither. Instead, the hyrax has similar teeth, toes, and skull structures to that of an elephant’s. More importantly, the hyrax shares an ancestor with the elephant. The hyrax’s strong molars grind up tough vegetation, and two large incisor teeth grow out to be tiny tusks, just like an elephant’s.
There are three members of the Procaviidae or hyrax family: the rock hyrax, tree hyrax, and bush or yellow-spotted hyrax. The rock hyrax is covered in short brown fur, with a lighter underbelly. There are extra-long hairs that stick out around the body called guard hairs to help the hyrax feel its way around, the same way a cat uses its whiskers. The hyrax has short legs and rounded toes with a long nail, called a grooming claw, on the inner toe of the back foot that is used for picking through hair and scratching an itch.
A scent gland on its back (called a dorsal gland) is covered with longer black hairs. The gland is used to mark rocks or trees to communicate with other hyraxes. A male hyrax’s nose is larger than a female’s. All hyraxes have a special eyelid (called a nictitating membrane) for sun and dust protection; a bulge in each iris acts as a built-in sun visor.

RIP Jesse
Update from Mara Predator Conservation Programme
RIP Jesse, 2011- 24/07/2023
We are saddened by the loss of the famous nomad male lion Jesse. The Mara North Conservancy (Masai Mara, Kenya) (MNC) rangers alerted us of a male lion who was badly beaten and succumbed to his injuries some hours later, and our team could quickly respond to the scene and ID him as Jesse.
Jesse was born in the Cheli pride in MNC and MPCP first got to know him when he was still a youngster within his pride. We estimated his birth to be in early 2011. Jesse and his brother Frank left the Cheli pride in 2014, and we were the first to document the duo taking over the Offbeat pride in May 2014, after a very short dispersal period both in time and space. Jesse and Frank successfully raised one set of offspring during their pride tenure, and although all their sons have either died or gone missing, their daughters are successfully continuing the Offbeat pride. Jesse had to vacate the Offbeat pride when Frank went missing in 2016, forcing Jesse to begin a nomadic life and lived as a nomad until his death. He was seen several times in Naboisho and Olare-Motorogi conservancies, and the National Reserve. Jesse eventually ventured back to MNC towards the beginning of 2023. He ended his days where he started as a pride male, in MNC’s Offbeat area, after a fatal fight with the current Offbeat males, the Engoyanai males.

ZEBRAS the STALLION & MARE of the SAVANNAH.

Some interesting facts about them.

A GROUP OF ZEBRAS IS CALLED A ‘DAZZLE’.

THERE ARE THREE SPECIES OF ZEBRA. (Plains, Mountain and Grévy's zebra)

GRÉVY'S ZEBRAS ARE CLASSIFIED AS ENDANGERED.(less than 2000 left in the wild).

ZEBRAS ARE BLACK ANIMALS WITH WHITE STRIPES

EACH ZEBRA SPECIES HAVE DIFFERENT STRIPS.

ZEBRAS STRIPES ARE UNIQUE LIKE FINGERPRINTS.

ZEBRAS STRIPES HELP CAMOUFLAGE THEM

ZEBRA STRIPES MAY SERVE AS BUG SPRAY OR AIR CONDITIONING.(black and white stripes radiates different energy and heat).

THEY ARE IMPRESSIVE CLIMBERS. (Not surprisingly, mountain zebras live in rugged terrain at high altitudes).

THEY ARE SOCIAL ANIMALS.

THEY ARE ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR DANGER. (When plains zebras sense a predator, they release a high-pitched bark).

ZEBRAS NEIGH, BRAY & BARK.

THEY HAVE SEVERAL FORMS OF SELF-DEFENSE.(beside their ability to run at 65km/h they kick, bite & push predators).

NEW-BORN FOALS CAN STAND AFTER SIX MINUTES.

A MOTHER ZEBRA WILL KEEP A FOAL FAR FROM OTHER ZEBRA FOR COUPLE OF DAY. (until the foal can recognize her scent, voice, and appearance).

The African Hoopoe is unmistakable, with a distinctive crown of feathers, rich chestnut coloration and a long, curved beak.
During breeding season, the male Hoopoe is thought to select the nest site. The female then incubates the eggs alone but is often fed by the male during this time.

*QUESTION*
: What nest sites are typically used by the African Hoopoe?

13/05/2023

Gerenuk are primarily threatened by loss and fragmentation of their natural habitat, associated with growth of local human populations, leading to the development of settlements, roads and agriculture. As a result, some isolated populations cannot find suitable food and shelter. Some are unable to find mates as well as escape predators. Further, this species has served as a game animal in Africa for a long period of more than 200 years. In spite of having limited supply and very small natural range, gerenuks heavily suffer from hunting as trophies and for consumption.

Adult Bald Eagles have white heads and tails with dark brown bodies and wings. Their legs and bills are bright yellow. Immature birds have mostly dark heads and tails; their brown wings and bodies are mottled with white in varying amounts. Young birds attain adult plumage in about five years. You'll find Bald Eagles soaring high in the sky, flapping low over treetops with slow wingbeats, or perched in trees or on the ground. Bald Eagles scavenge many meals by harassing other birds or by eating carrion or garbage. They eat mainly fish, but also hunt mammals, gulls, and waterfowl
