Lions typically mate throughout the year, and the process is intense and frequent. When a female lion (lioness) is in estrus (heat), she and a male lion may mate every 20-30 minutes over several days—sometimes up to 50 times a day! This frequent mating increases the chances of conception.

During the act, the male lion often bites the lioness's neck gently to keep her in position. Interestingly, the male's barbed reproductive organ can cause slight discomfort to the lioness when he withdraws, which is believed to trigger ovulation.

Mating rights among lions are highly competitive, with dominant males in a pride having primary access to receptive females. When new males take over a pride, they may drive out or kill cubs sired by the previous males to bring the females back into estrus and start their own lineage.
