Secretary bird (Sagittarius serpentarius)
The origin of the secretary birds names are much debated. One theory is that the feathers jutting out behind the bird's head, reminded 19th century European of the quill pens that secretaries tucked behind their ears, While it's grey and black body is the reminiscent of their tailcoats.

Disturbance of nesting flamingoes at Lake Natron. Sad to report that a local garage owner took these photos of a Greater Flamingo colony at Lake Natron. I do not have a day date. They were passed onto me by a 3rd party. Flamingoes are notorious for deserting entire colonies when disturbed like this. Emmanuel Fidelis Mgimwa might you know of this?
The second image is a concentration of Lessers around the southern edge of the lake. If ground conditions are suitable, many small islands in the south, cracks in the trona in the north then LFs may well be breeding at the moment.

Hi Joseph Kodonyo. I'll probably need your help identifying the birds I've photographed on the tour from Victoria Falls to Cape Town. My fellow travelers have asked why I'm so interested in birds and I tell them it's all down to the wonderful guide I met in Kenya!

Lea Gilbert
A wonderful morning spent in the fascinating company of Joseph Ole Kodonyo exploring the rich bird life of Lake Elementaita. Together with Joseph's help we identified - by sight and/or sound - over 50 individual species in a morning's walk around the shore. Apparently, the lake has over 400, so we have made a respectable start to our birding career! 🐦🐦🐦🐦🐦
We even saw a mighty Acacia tree crash to the ground not far away from us - thankfully of old age and natural causes - which was an amazing experience. We learned about a number of indigenous plants around the lake and on our own plot. We also got to see the beautiful lake from the Soysambu Conservancy side, which has certainly whetted our appetite to explore further.
Thank you so much, Joseph, for sharing your boundless enthusiasm and extensive knowledge with us 🐦🐦🐦🐦🐦🙏
PS no photos, as amazingly we had no camera on this occasion, so a copy of Birds of Kenya will have to suffice!

Ostrich's brains are as big as a walnut and smaller than their eyes. They are not particularly intelligent, but with the largest eyeball of any bird, they can see as far as 2.2 miles (3.5 km).

Cape Buffalo - Syncerus caffer caffer
The horns start to grow up and out and are fully formed when the buffalo reaches the age of 5 or 6 years. In bulls, the horns meet in the middle of their heads forming a continuous bone shield referred to as a "boss". In large bulls, the distance between the ends of the horns can reach upwards of one meter.

Between the months of July and October, one and a half million wildebeest accompanied by vast numbers of zebras and gazelles, make the long and dangerous trek from Tanzania’s Serengeti, northwards towards this corner of Kenya.

Lines of animals stretch as far as the eye can see across the open plains but the most dramatic of all, is the moment when the migration arrives at the Mara River; they must cross it to reach the rich grazing areas on the other side. It takes the bravest to plunge first into the swirling currents and thousands follow. Meanwhile, keen crocodiles cruise the waters ...

If witnessing the Great Migration is a dream for you - the good news is that we do have small pockets of availability here and there!
