Too early for that buddy! Have you ever heard a Tree Hyrax calling out? 📣
We were lucky to see & hear this one call after lunch just outside the office. Most unusual as they are normally nocturnal & this sighting is a first😍
Their calls include screams, grunts, snorts, shrieks, wails and cackling calls which sound a bit like evil laughter! A study on hyrax calls revealed Rock Hyrax males ‘sing’ to attract females and they build phrases by using a simple syntax of different sounds.
We make a point of telling our guests about this or they might well be terrified out of their wits in the night! They are about the size of a bunny and normally live in pairs.

Spotting a dik-dik is always a thrill, but it was twice as nice to encounter a mother and her newborn as the sun dipped over the horizon yesterday!
It was extra special since those spindly little legs were stepping into the world for the very first time – as these tiny antelope can stand within five minutes of being born, and nurse within hours.
What a privilege to share in the precious beginning of a new life here in the wilderness – just as the Sarara Valley is turning all lush and green after recent rains!

Another incredible Safari sighting for us, the endangered African Wild Dogs.
There are estimated to be fewer than 6,000 African wild dogs left in the wild. This number represents around 700 breeding packs, making them one of the most endangered carnivores in Africa. Their populations are fragmented and continue to decline due to threats such as habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, diseases like rabies and distemper, and competition with larger predators like lions and hyenas. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect and stabilize their populations.

To see a leopard is rare in itself – but combined with a pack of wild dogs and a herd of elephants, this is a truly remarkable sighting.
A Wilderness guest recently filmed this encounter at Wilderness Vumbura Plains in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. As wild dogs closed in on a leopard perched on an overhanging tree branch, a herd of elephants became curious and sauntered over to the scene. Hear their fantastic trumpet-blowing and the unmistakable chattering of wild dogs.
