Preparing for the new fishing season rebuilding one of Kamara II's Caterpillar engines with genuine parts only. Borrowed this frame from Peter Ruysenaars, and it has worked a treat. Only had to remove the rear window, which is only held in with a number of stainless steel bolts and then drill one hole through the deck to allow the chain block to pass.

The engine block was finally lifted out on deck and brought ashore to fit new liners and pistons. Every part is being carefully repainted and serviced to make the engine like new again.

Kamara II was fishing on Friday 3rd January. 14yr old Jason Glen tagged a small blue marlin, which now brings his personal tally to 1 blue, 1 black and 2 striped marlin. We also had a double strike from sailfish but didn't hook up. Jason's dad Rob landed a nice 12-kg bull dorado as well.

Conditions are nice, blue water and the wind in the correct direction but seemingly not many stripes about as yet. There were some large schools of skipjack and yellowfin tuna out there too.

White Otter was out fishing on Thursday and found a small black marlin and a sailfish. Apparently the water was a bit dirty though.

Although we haven't been fishing the past week, White Otter from next door with regular angler Mike has had some good success. On one day they rose 4 marlin tagging 3 of them all striped and also had a black marlin a couple days ago.

We're out Monday and Tuesday so hoping for some good action. There have been a strong wind past few weeks as one might expect for January.

Wow! This is the first season on record without a single booking for the month of February!
A couple days ago White Otter was out rose a couple marlin but missed them but had a double header the day before.
I am told that the Diani Samaki Classic has 17 boats entered but not one marlin yesterday. Maybe this year it will be late January or February when they come in force. I might even get to do a bit of fishing myself!

The kaskazi as we know it here may have been very late coming this year but it now appears well set. This is the NE monsoon wind that brings with it the marlin; all three species blue, black and striped as well as sailfish. The conditions look great and we have availability so why not book now!!

This year it’s the youngsters catching all the fish. Today 13yr old Alex caught a 47kg striped marlin on 30lb line whilst older brother Jonathan tagged a sailfish.

28/12/2018

Young Jason Glenn aged only 12 tagged a black marlin fishing aboard Broadbill.

Beautiful blue water with a few dorado and wahoo as well as some yellowfin tuna. The main striped marlin run is yet to happen but with such perfect water and other fish I am sure they will soon be there. Perhaps tomorrow when we’re out again.

Fishing today on Broadbill with Paresh and Kush Haria from Nairobi. It was great to get back out on the water at the best time of the year. Kush boated a 70kg Blue marlin that sadly became tail wrapped during the fight and had to be boated. Paresh caught a wahoo and Kush also had a falusi. Hope for plenty more marlin in the channel again this season. Last year the best marlin fishing on the coast was in the Pemba Channel. Please get in touch if you would like a day out fishing

A first blue marlin for Alexey Kashchenko taken on 30-lb line from Broadbill.

There have been quite a few marlin and sail in the Pemba Channel although a series of cyclones off Madagascar has brought in some cold green water. Hopefully that will pass through by the morning

12 yr old Liam Keshavjee fighting a striped marlin aboard Kamara II today. Despite being foul hooked under the throat he brought the fish to the boat where it was duly released.

We lost a second marlin near the boat, and missed a few sail

A great day fishing on Kamara II yesterday with my son, Chris and daughter-in-law Leanne. It was a beautiful day with quite a strong northeaster (Kaskazi) blowing. Chris went 3 for 3 on striped marlin and 0 for 2 on sailfish that just knocked down big marlin lures. As we say, any day that you catch a marlin is a good day but to get 3 from 3 hits is a great day.

An exciting start to the marlin season fishing with my niece Kate Hemphill on Kamara II. Katie caught her first marlin, a stripey estimated at 60 kg (130 lb). A great effort Kate well done very proud of you.

We also picked up 2 falusi (dorado, mahi mahi, lampuga, etc) and had a few more heavy strikes. The fish are definitely there!

It’s that time of the year again when the wind swings into the northeast and the marlin arrive in the channel. Sadly not fishing though, teaching powerboat courses instead

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of a local legend, Mzee Mohamed Masudi also know to many of us as Mzee Suleimani. He was a true gentleman, very softly spoken from Wasini but as strong as an ox in his youth. He fished with longline and gill nets (jerife) for large sharks, usually alone. I recall how one day in the 1970's how he came in with an 800-lb tiger shark single-handed in his dugout canoe sitting astride it. Here's a photo of him at his home taken by my sister Pippa when we visited him a couple years ago. His mind and eyesight were still really good as was his handshake but his legs had given up. Rest in peace Mzee

Both boats, Kamara II and Broadbill are ready for the fishing season, not long before the askari starts to blow and the marlin arrive in the Pemba Channel.
