The ongoing drought experienced in the country has had huge impact on wildlife and habitat.

Some of the measures being put in place are; provision of water and forage, water trucking at the dried up water pans/dams, water supplementation through boreholes, water pans and distribution by tankers, desilting earth dams to harvest during the rainy seasons, stakeholder engagements in order to reduce the risks of accidental fires, promote human wildlife coexistence.

Did you know Hyenas are good hunters and infact hunt 95% of the time and scavenge only 5% for their food. Unlike other predators, when hyenas eat, digestion takes place within 24hours. When their food remains, they store it in water so that it doesn't decay fast but remains fresh. Puting the food in water also prevents flies and vultures from eating it.Did you know Hyenas are good hunters and infact hunt 95% of the time and scavenge only 5% for their food. The Buffalo is standing in a puddle of water. Cats donโ€™t like water, still loading due to the congestion we couldn't get close to the puddle of water...

Today we lost another great big tusker. Tolstoy, the gentle giant of Amboseli, passed away at 51 years old. For those of you who remember Tim, who passed away two years ago, Tolstoy was his uncle. Tolstoy's older sister, Trista, was Tim's mother.

Exciting news! Elephant TWINS have been born in Samburu National Reserve! ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜

During the weekend, Bora from the Winds family gave birth to TWO elephant calves. Here is the pair (male and female) at around a day old, exploring their surroundings. Twin births like this are very rare - in fact, we havenโ€™t seen twins in the park in decades!

Approximately 2.1 billion birds are on transit, migrating from Europe to Africa.

This is an annual migration phenomenon known as Palaearctic-African migration. These birds breed (mate and produce young ones) in Europe and Asia and migrate to spend the winter in Africa. They cover a distance of between 6,000km and 10,000km one way!

These long-distant migration patterns are complex. They have evolved over thousands of years and are controlled at least partially by the genetic makeup of the birds. The migrating birds get compass information from the sun, the stars, and by sensing the earthโ€™s magnetic field. They also get information from the position of the setting sun and from landmarks seen during the day. Thereโ€™s even evidence that sense of smell plays a key role.

Kenya, being on one of the migratory passage, host one of the globally recognized migratory bird ringing โ€˜centerโ€™ โ€“ Ngulia Safari Lodge

For the last 51 years, bird ringers from Europe and Kenya meet in West National Park at Ngulia Safari Lodge to participate in the ringing of these Palaearctic migratory songbirds.

Most of these birds fly south at night, passing over Tsavo West National Park in November and December. On dark, misty nights, the migrating songbirds become disoriented and land in the bush around the lights of the lodge.

The birds are gently caught, carried in cloth bags, identified, measured, and fitted with a light metal ring on one leg. Then they are released to continue their journey. Since 1969, a total of 597,694 Palearctic migratory birds of 72 species and 15,570 individuals of Afrotropical birds of 234 species have been ringed at the Ngulia Ringing Site.

Last year, a total of 11,254 birds, comprising of 10,666 Palaearctic migrants of 32 species and 588 Afrotropical birds of 75 species, were captured and ringed.

This year this two-week ringing session starts today 30th November to 10th December 2021 at Ngulia Lodge.

It's unbelievable how a little mini project of mini watering points at Tsavo East Voi Gate, Education Centre and TCA HQ, just started about a week ago is now not just favourite drinking points for birds, monkeys, hyraxes, agamas, baboons, dik diks, dudus.. but now also for the Lesser Kudus as well ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ can't wait to see what more animals will frequent these drinking points especially during the current drought..๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Tomorrow Bachuma Gate and then Sala Gate and then Manyani Gate.. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Whilst thinking of the bigger wildlife, we somehow tend to forget about the smaller wildlife suffering too during this drought and fogetting how extremely important they are in creating a balance in the ecosystem.. soooo yesss.. let's not forget about our dudus, our creepy crawlies, our birds and our every littlest of little creature as we think of our bigger ones..๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜
