We are a strong nation and a resilient people. We will grieve. We will endure. We will survive. Together.
Thank you to the and congratulations to the class of 2020 . I've always been inspired by flight and as the screaming shows... I still am.
Also F-16s are gorgeous.

Follow .to_the.world
I love Japanese gardens. Mainly because I was obsessed with ponds and fish in my youth. Landscape design and yardwork have always been a since of meditation. The Brugmans come from eastern Iowa farmland and the Midwest hasn't left... Now, I am looking to redesign the landscaping for our townhouse HOA. So, I've been studying, taking notes, sketching and exploring gardens recently. I also heard Dr. Massey's Evening Seminar on Japanese Gardening while onboard

& This is why I love Japanese Gardens ... Plant layering, intensive pruning, water features, prominent use of stone, borders and critically, the emphasis of 'empty' spaces. Enhancing the beauty of nature... Spectacular.

🌅 Coming into the weekend like... 🛳️
The best arrival into port was coming into Port of Spain in Trinidad. The sun rise was spectacular and the island was so lush and green. We only arrive into one more port on the voyage... San Diego, California in three days.

Last day in country for this remarkable journey of Semester at Sea. 🇨🇷 Costa Rica is very chill and a great spot to reflect on what the last three and a half months have been. Still in awe of how this all worked out! I owe it to the hard work of Kayla and her opportunity opened mine. Such an amazing experience to share together. ❤️

4 hour flight delay was a perfect time to edit photos. It was fun working with some photos of the Galapagos landscapes to find symmetry and shape to make some trippy images. In doing so, it makes me appreciate the variety in ecosystems and the amazing form, color and texture of each part of the islands.

Those Caribbean nights ... Entering the Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic under a dark sky. Mercury and Jupiter shine so brightly in the western sky. Off shore oil rigs burn big orange flares in the distance.

For eight days we headed west. From Ghana to Brazil, nothing but salt water surrounded us. We were crossing an ocean in an eighth of the time it used to take, following a route many were forced to endure.
From the interior of West Africa, they were marched to the coast. Cape Coast and Elmina were the first places they'd experienced the ocean, and the white man. Crammed into dungeons, beaten, starved and sold. Through the door of no return and chained to the wooden ships they were. To cross an ocean and arrive in a New World. A transfer of immense population under the most brutal and inhumane circumstances. No one knew where they were going. Seasickness added to the horrific conditions. It is hard to grapple with that passage and what it means.
And somehow I stand here, posting this from Salvador, Brazil. Enjoying the culture the slaves stubbornly and bravely held onto. Enjoying the vibrance of the color, pattern and expression of Africa that lives in South America. Enjoying the fact that things might not be perfect but they are better than those awful times.

It feels amazing to be back in Brazil. 🇧🇷 There is such an exuberance for life here. So much fun to have and connections to make. Tonight there was a big concert on the cobble stone street. Reminded me of carnival in Barranquilla, Colombia... Everyone in the street together, enjoying the music.
The African influence is heavy here in Salvador, and it's awesome. Brazilian Portuguese is also my favorite language to learn and speak. It's so fun to work on it through conversations.
Better still, is experiencing this place with my wife . It means so much to share time together in various parts of the world. We're still young and these opportunities are such blessings. Love you Nuggles!

🇬🇭 Ghana... Thank you. 🇬🇭 There were some difficult lows but equally spectacular highs. Your people are open, friendly and honest. I will take away a lot from this experience, mostly being thankful for what I've grown up with and also much more graceful for the economic situations facing the developing world.
Weird as it sounds, I was looking forward to walking down an open market street and being the only white person. That situation did happen and feeling completely conspicuous is a unique and powerful reminder of how others feel in different places in the world. By the fifth day, the dark black skin of the Ghanaians became 'normal' and I too, stared at other white folks on the street. It's amazing how that happens.
Now onto Brazil! 🇧🇷

🇸🇳 Dakar, Senegal through the frame. 🇸🇳 .
The MV World Odyssey needed to make a pit stop today to have a team of divers examine the portside propeller for entanglement. The logistics of this voyage are staggering and this small example shows just a glimpse of it: The expertise of the engineering crew to recognize the propulsion difference and potential issue. The communication to port authorities from the bridge to get confirmation on a mooring location. The rapid contracting of a local Senegalese dive team. The navigation and planning to maintain schedule. It's incredible to witness and be a part of. The martime world is just that, a different world. A fascinating one to explore for a landlocked Coloradan.

Heading back to the ship after three days with a host family in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. It's hard to describe the love and generosity our Amazigh families showed our entire group, but they welcomed us into their homes as sons and daughters. This has been an experience that changed my worldview. I'll share more about this soon.

Spent all day walking through markets in Casablanca. We went through both the New & Old Medinas and found such an amazing variety of texture and color. Morocco has also provided us with our first sense of... this is so different... and it's been so refreshing.
I've been taking a pen everywhere and writing new words and phrases on the back of a tourist map of Casablanca. It has been so fun to communicate in a mix of Arabic, Berber, French (all spoken terribly by the way) and English. I've found the few words of each that I know - go a long way. The Moroccans really appreciate it and they have been the best part of my introduction to the continent so far.
We expressed interest in cactus fruit being sold from a cart on the side of the street. The vendor washed his knife - cut the skin off and handed it to us. He wouldn't accept any coins as payment - he wanted to share it with us. The same story repeated itself over and over again. An extra pastry here, free olives there. We went into a clothing shop with two young men having tajine for lunch (a mix of vegetables, spices and this time, chicken, cooked in a funnel shaped clay pot). Almost upon entry, they invited me to try the meal - an offer I happily took them up on. So we tore off bits of bread and all shared a few bites together. I've never experienced that before. Just entering a shop, sharing a few words and then literally breaking bread together. It was so meaningful.
Casablanca had also provided some truly magical scenes. We were shown to what used to be the old Spanish consulate where a man named Abdul Kareem was living. He took care of a lot of the neighborhood's cats - 89 to be exact! He named each one, he told us as he fed a tiny kitten with a plastic syringe full of milk. A sea bird anxiously paced around the cats. That was mon ami - French for love of mine - a seagull who had one of its wings bitten off by a dog. Greasy and dirty, Abdul Kareem displayed one of the purest forms of love & tenderness we'd ever seen.
Now Kayla & I are getting ready for leading a student trip to a small Berber village in the Atlas Mountains for the next 4 days. Pumped to keep exploring @ Casablanca, Morocco
