Together with several tour operators based in Nairobi, we travelled to Watamu to sample a new facility near Mida Creek; Butah Gardens. Everything from the train ride, road transfer from SGR Mombasa to Watamu and the warm reception by Butah team was excellent.
On the first day, Edward had invited service providers; boat operators, restaurants (Crab shark, Sita Sunset & Prawn Lake), curio sellers and KWS for a round-table interaction. Even the area Senator came by!!
Yesterday we spent time sampling Watamu offerings; visiting Sita sunset restaurant (they have a reptile park), Crab Shark, had lunch at prawn Lake (they also offer kayaks), Marine park for swimming and snorkelling.
The highlights were many and the transport mode by boda (motorbike) made it even more interesting especially because we rode through villages and not main roads.
Overall, thumbs up to Edward and his team at Butah Gardens for putting all these together for us. Highly recommend Butah for the hospitality, serene and quiet environs, sumptuous meals, beautiful gardens and comfy rooms. The sunset views at the rooftop are absolutely scandaloso 🔥🔥!!!

Olare Motorogi conservancy is an expansive wilderness area within the Mara ecosystem. With three resident lion prides, cheetah, leopard, buffalo, elephants, giraffes and many others, the conservancy is one of the best places to watch, photograph and even film these iconic wildlife species. The conservancy boasts only five exclusive camps. Porini Lion Camp, where we stayed is one among the 5. Fewer camps thus fewer numbers of vehicles meant that you enjoy sightings better and no crowding/harassment of wildlife.
Tim and Mary have been travelling with us for the last 16 years! It was an honor and privilege to again plan another wonderful trip for the couple and their son Daniel. Porini was our last port-of-call before they embark on a beach holiday extension.
Porini Lion camp took great care of us and the guides Dennis and Julius did their very best in getting us the best sightings. The breathtaking sunrises, dramatic sunsets and memorable sundowners were all great.

Just returned from the Mara with our guests Mirjam Majrim and her mom. This was their fifth safari with us over a span of slightly over10 years!.
From leaving the camp before sunrise, bush breakfasts, wonderful game viewing and sundowners, the trip was great.
These are no longer just clients, they have become friends. Thank you for the honor and privilege to once again plan your holiday trip in Kenya. Thank you Mirry for catching all the moments with great photography.

So what really happens when the elephants and lions meet? We are in Tsavo East, Aruba windmill to be precise. We are watching zebras, GG (Grant's Gazelles) and kongoni coming down for a drink. Suddenly, everyone is alert and vigilant. Eyes trained in the direction of the waterhole. With the help of a pair of binoculars, we see two lionesses at the waterhole. One is pearched on the rim of the trough. The other is inside, ears sticking out. There is a stand-off!
The ungulates are desperate for a drink in the sweltering heat. The kongonis make the first move, ambling towards the opposite end of the waterhole from the lions ("if we stand here we will die of thirst, if we go for the drink, the lions may kill us but may also spare us"). After some hesitation, they start drinking. The zebras join in too. They are more cautious. The lions watch on disinterested.
Having assessed the situation and determined that the lions are not in a hunting mood, it's busy again at the waterhole albeit with a healthy distance kept from the lions. They all drink then file past the king on their way away.
We are recording all this with a small camera using the binoculars as the zoom (hence the rounded profile). Suddenly, a family of elephants appear in our view. As they file towards the watering point, the skip a step, take a quick glance at the lions and move on to drink. No animosity shown between the two members of the "Big 5". This is in sharp contrast to the last time I witnessed such a meeting in Mara.
Soon enough, the lionesses walk off to a standing ovation by the ungulates. Long live the king (queen in our case).
