Over 170km long and 70km across, Lake Issyk-Köl (Ysyk-Köl, Issyk-Kul) is the world's second-largest alpine lake after Lake Titicaca in South America. The name, meaning ‘hot lake’, is something of an exaggeration. A combination of extreme depth, thermal activity and mild salinity do indeed ensure the lake never freezes, even in the fierce Central Asian winters, despite lying at an altitude of over 1600m. And the mysteriously temperate waters create an ever-mild microclimate. But the brave summer tourists who swim in the vivid blue waters, find views framed not by palms but by the remarkable backdrop of the snow-dappled Ala-Too mountains.

Kyrgyzstan’s fertile and densely populated Fergana Valley is home to some of the largest intact stands of walnut trees on Earth. Its so-called walnut-fruit forests — which contain 300 species of plants and trees, including ancestral strains of apples, plums, and pears — cover roughly 30,000 hectares, splashing green onto an otherwise dry-and-dusty Central Asian landscape. Driving beside a riverbed on the valley’s floor, you might momentarily mistake nearby walnut forests for the olive groves of southern Spain.

Country style Inn and Yurt accommodations amid spectacular mountain scenery and peaceful countryside for horseback riding, pastoral walks, mountain treks, and relaxation, with great Kyrgyz cuisine in the famous Shamshy Gorge, just 2 hours driving from Bishkek.

Nomad’s Yurt Inn and Guest Cottage are situated in Shamshy Gorge, at 105 km East of Bishkek. The Shamshy Gorge is famous as one of the most beautiful gorges in the Kyrgyz Range Through the gorge, the Shamshy River crashes dramatically from rock to rock. Shamshy Pass, located at the altitude of 3573 m, connects the Kochkorskiy and Chuy valleys. Nowadays, many horse trips pass through our gorge enroute over Shamshy Pass in the direction of Son-Kul Lake. A rich variety of vegetation is presented here. Slopes are covered with fir forests, dog rose and barberry bushes.

We offer one-day and longer adventures - horseback riding trips, trekking and accommodation in Nomad’s Yurt Inn and Guest Cottage in Shamshy Gorge. Our guests can taste local traditional meals cooked with eco-natural products.

Duration: 8 days horse riding + 3 return way of the horses.
Best season: early June – early September
Group size: 5 -6 persons
Notes: The participants of horse riding trip should be well trained horse riders.

Itinerary:
Day 1. Arrival in Smashy Gorge. Lunch in Yurt Inn. Afternoon walking in the fir-tree forest and enjoy nature. Dinner and accommodation in Yurt Inn.
Day 2. Meet horsemen and guides’ team, load all the stuffs and start horseback riding towards Shamshy pass (3 570 meters). Full Board. Overnight in tents before the pass. Horse riding time: 6 hours

Day 3. After breakfast continue tour and cross the Shamshy pass (3 570 meters). Discover the nice view of Kochkor-Shamshy valley and hike up to Sarala-Saz jailoo, which opens beautiful views of the Sandyk mountains. Meet local nomads and see local traditions and customs. View of nomad’s yurts from the top of the mountain look like Parisian’s mushrooms. Full board. Set up the tents near the nomad’s yurts in Sarala-Saz. Horse riding time: 6 hours.
Day 4. Horse riding tour towards Karakol river. Descend to Iri-Suu jailoo, and then take an evening walk over the hill into the beautiful Karakol River valley. Overnight in tent. Full board. Horse riding time: 4 hours.

Day 5. Loading of the gears for a long day tour through nearly-empty country. Pass over the Buchuk Pass (3400 m). On the other side, after a brief break for lunch on the trail, descend into the beautiful Sook Valley. Wild onions cover the high cold ridges, while lower down whole hillsides of wildflowers bloom. You can see eagles soar and plenty marmots in the amazing pasture. Set up the tents close to Sook river. Full board. Horse riding time: 5-6 hours.

Day 6. Breakfast. Detour to the next valley west, the K*m Bel to approach to the 3 600 m K*m Bel Pass. From the pass, follow a ridge to the peak, 3656 m above sea level, with fascinating 360 views and sheer drops to the north. After lunch descend into the Jumgal valley, and follow it down to the Kyzart Pass (2664m). Set up the tent camp before the pass. Full board. Horse riding time: 6-7 hours.
Day 7. Pass the Kyzart Pass (2664m) and then cross Kyzyl-Kiya jailoo, an enormous, relatively flat sea of grass. Continue over the Chaar-Archa Pass (3 061 m) into the Chaar-Archa Valley. After lunch cross the river and follow the trail over hills to Kilemche Jailoo. The meaning of the jailoo is “like a carpet,” and this swathe of grass covers whole mountain ranges, with shadings as subtle as any shyrdak (shyrdak is a Kyrgyz felt carpet). Full board. Overnight in the tent. Horse riding time: 5 hours.

Day 8. After breakfast spend the morning climbing to Jalgyz Karagai pass (3400 m), over the Song-Kol Mountains and into the lake’s basin. The morning climb affords wonderful views of Kilemche jailoo, and the pass itself is rocky and exciting. From the pass, Song-Kol is still distant, but as you traipse down the slopes, it gets larger and larger; the mountains on the other side get higher and higher, until finally the lake fills most of your field of view and the southern mountains tower above it. After lunch at Jaman Echki, follow the lakeshore east to the yurt at Batai Aral. Upon arrival meet your host family of Kyrgyz shepherds in Son-Kul lake. Meals and overnight are in a yurt of shepherds. Horse riding time: 5 hours.

The historical Pamir Highway, officially called M41, is an excellent challenge for a 4x4 adventure travelers. Most of the road is paved, except for the mountain passes, and the length of the road is 2.038 km kilometers linking Termez (Uzbekistan) and Kara-Balta (Kyrgyzstan) going through the Pamir Mountains. The road is heavily damaged in places by erosion, earthquakes, landslides, and avalanches.

A Pamir Highway traveler must be experienced and completely devoted to safe, slow and obstacle-conscious driving to deter danger. The route of the Pamir Highway has been in use for millennia, as there are a limited number of viable routes through the high PamirMountains; the road formed one link of the ancient Silk Road trade route. Throughout the area, the land is typically rugged and dry. This road is sometimes referred to as “The Road from Hell”.

Traditional felt carpets are one of the foremost arts of the Kyrgyz people and an integral part of their cultural heritage. The Kyrgyz traditionally produce two types of felt carpets: Ala-kiyiz and Shyrdaks. Knowledge, skills, diversity, the semantics of ornamentation, and the ceremonies of creating carpets are all important cultural components, providing Kyrgyz people with a sense of identity and continuity. The making of Kyrgyz felt carpets is inseparably linked to the everyday life of nomads, who used felt carpets to warm and decorate their homes.

17/05/2016

Engilchek Glacier (Kyrgyz: Эңилчек, Russian: Энильчек - Enilchek, also Иныльчек - Inylchek) is a glacier in the Central Tian Shan Mountains of Issyk Kul Province, northeastern Kyrgyzstan. Its snout is 50 km east of the village of Engilchek.

The South Inylchek Glacier ranks as the sixth longest non-polar glacier in the world and is the largest and fastest moving glacier in Kyrgyzstan. The main glacier has two arms, the North and South Engilchek Glaciers. The latter is longer and provides an overall length of 60.5 kilometres (38 mi).with an area of 17.2 square kilometres (7 sq mi) and an ice thickness of roughly 150–200 m in the bottom parts.

The glacier stems from the Chinese-Kazakh-Kyrgyz massif of Khan Tengri and P*k Pobedy and the upper part of the glacier falls in all three countries. Meltwater from the glacier feeds a tributary of the Aksu River, which crosses the Chinese border into the Tarim Basin. Water from this glacier also feeds the seasonal glacial Lake Merzbacher which ultimately flows into the Engilchek River.
