Hey there! When you visit Kyrgyzstan you might notice these bones in cafes, yurts or even in some hotels and wonder what are they. Alchiks (Chuko Bones)
Chuko game was the favorite game of little Kyrgyzstani boys in the villages. Alchik or Chuko is a small bone of a knee joint of a ram. Each Kyrgyz child used to have a set of chuko painted in different colors.
The game is similar to the bowling, here the player supposed to use a lot of logic and precision.
Alchiks are lined up in a row or circle, and the goal of the players is to throw their alchiks at a distance of several meters to knock out chuko of other players and hit the bones out of the circle. If he succeeds, the player takes the knocked-out chukos for himself so until there are no alchiks left in the
game.Would you like to try playing chuko?

Hey👋🏼Do you know what are these sculptures ?
Let me provide you with some information about them.
Bulbul – a carved solid stone sculpture. They were placed on the hills and high mounds, on the steppe hills or in the centre of the Maidan. They played an important role in the life of travelers as they were often placed at crossroads.
Many Balbals have been found in Kyrgyzstan before. Many stone warriors (bulbuls) of the nomadic Turks are found in Çolpan Ata and Karakol on the shores of Issyk Kul. It is estimated that the bulbuls were erected in the 6th century.
These grave markers in Kyrgyzstan and throughout Central Asia were erected by nomadic Turkish tribes, and almost all of the balbals in Kyrgyzstan are distributed in the Chuy Valley.
The Balbals to the sculptures of the Central Asian Turks, usually in the form of a sword and figure. Usually carved on a piece of stone, symbolizing the enemies that the warrior had killed, and the people believed to be his servants in the other world, planted around the tombs of the deceased warriors at the time of widespread preservation of the validity of the shamanic religion.
They are from half a meter up to three meters tall.
When the number of these stones is the right of the dead person; the power, the courage, the hero of the hero.
The bulbuls, which is prevalent in the pre-Islamic period, left its place to gravestones after acceptance of Islamic religion. Bulbul word is a word from the Old Turkic language and means, to strike another meaning just stone sculpture, carved stone. However, the meaning of the word is disputed. Archeologists believe that carved swords a similar to akinak, such weapons were actively used during the Saka period describing a person who was a fighter or a tribe leader with much power. A cup is symbolizing just to make sure the deceased one would not suffer from hunger. Please leave comment if it was interesting 🙌🏻

The culture of nomads cannot be imagined without rock art. Petrogryphs are drawings on stones. There are many places in the Kyrgyz Republic where you can meet them. 1.Saimaluu-Tash

Petroglyphs of Saimaluu-Tash is the largest collectionof petroglyphs in Central Asia, carved on basalt blocks. There are about 90,000of them in the Saimaluu-Tash tract. The complex is located in Jalal-Abad regionof Kyrgyzstan at an altitude of 3,000 meters above the sea level.

There are many single petroglyphs and multi-figured compositions in Saimaluu-Tash. The oldest petroglyphs in the tract saw the Bronze Age. They date back to the first millennium BC. More recent date back tothe 8th century AD.The Saimaluu-Tash petroglyphs are very different, both in terms of the date and the style ofimages.

Ancient carved pictures on stones show the animal world: there are images of leopards, wolves, goats, red deer, and even elephants and lions. There are also images of domestic animals: horses, bulls and yaks. The compositionson basalt blocks depict scenes of hunting, domestication of wild animals, ritual dances, gods in chariots and wagons, as well as demonic humanoid creatures.

I’m sure you have seen these carpets while you were making researches about Kyrgyzstan. So, let me provide you some information about this carpet called “Shyrdak”. Traditional felt carpets are one of the foremost arts of the Kyrgyz people and an integral part of their cultural heritage. The Kyrgyz traditionally produce two types of felt carpets: Ala-kiyiz and Shyrdaks. Knowledge, skills, diversity, the semantics of ornamentation, and the ceremonies of creating carpets are all important cultural components, providing Kyrgyz people with a sense of identity and continuity. The making of Kyrgyz felt carpets is inseparably linked to the everyday life of nomads, who used felt carpets to warm and decorate their homes. Creation of felt carpets demands unity among the community and fosters the transmission of traditional knowledge – as a rule by older women who are normally concentrated in rural and mountainous areas, to younger women within the family. The Ala-kiyiz and Shyrdak traditional art is in danger of disappearing, however. The number of practitioners is diminishing, with most over forty years of age. The lack of governmental safeguarding, the disinterest of the younger generation, the dominance of inexpensive synthetic carpets, and the poor quality and low availability of raw materials are exacerbating the situation. As a result, Ala-kiyiz carpets have practically disappeared from Kyrgyz homes and Shyrdaks are under serious threat of being lost. But don’t worry we got a good news for you! Kyrgyzfriends have tours that include “Shyrdak show” where you can not only see and touch but also make a shyrdak by yourself with the help of locals.

Saddle up for a wild ride with Kok Boru, a thrilling game that’s more than just a game! This traditional sport brings together players, teams, and even the public, all mounted on brave stallions, to try and score points by maneuvering a goat’s carcass (or a mold for the animal lovers out there) into the opponent’s goal. But it’s not just about the game: Kok Boru is a deep-rooted cultural expression that unites communities and promotes teamwork, responsibility, and respect. The most experienced players serve as referees, while the wise ‘Kalystar’ elders ensure fairness. This historic tradition is passed down naturally through demos, festivals, and social events, and the community is actively involved in preserving the knowledge and skills of this unique sport. The National Kok-Boru Federation, established in 1998, plays a pivotal role in promoting and safeguarding this thrilling element through a range of activities. You can watch demonstration of kok boru on a tour with your Kyrgyzfriends.🙌🏻

Let's talk about the legendary Ak-kalpak, a traditional Kyrgyz male hat made with pure white felt, crammed with deep, sacred meanings. The art of Ak-kalpak crafting is a wondrous world of knowledge and skill nurtured by talented craftswomen who pass on the craft from generation to generation. It's a mix of felting, cutting, sewing and pattern embroidery, with over 80 types of Ak-kalpak to choose from, each with unique patterns and sacred meanings. This eco-friendly hat is as comfy as a pillow and looks like a snow-capped mountain, with its four sides representing the four elements of nature. The four edging lines? That's a symbol of life, and the tassels on top? Representing ancestors' posterity and memory. It's an emblem of Kyrgyz identity, uniting different tribes and communities, and even inviting outsiders to join in by wearing it on special occasions. Workshops and training centers all over the country keep this tradition alive, and in 2013, a nationwide project named "From Generation to Generation" celebrated the beauty of Ak-kalpak craftsmanship, resulting in an exhibition and published book.

The Significance of Elechek: A Traditional Kyrgyz Headwear
Elechek, a hair cap and long white fabric wrapped around the head like a turban, is a traditional female headwear in Kyrgyzstan. Adorned with embroidery, ribbons, and jewelry, it is an essential part of the traditional marriage ceremony, where elders perform a rite of passage by wrapping the bride's first elechek before she leaves with the groom. During the ceremony, elders offer blessings to express the community's wishes for the bride and her new family, such as good health, fertility, and harmony. Elechek is also worn by married women at significant events, with different styles signifying a person's age, social and marital status. The knowledge and skills are usually passed on informally, from mothers to daughters and from female elders to younger women. However, in recent years, women have begun transmitting this knowledge and skill in new ways, such as through workshops, video lessons, and collaborations with local scholars and researchers. Elechek contributes to a shared cultural identity and promotes solidarity and empowerment, strengthening intergenerational bonds.
