Red headed Trogon
..................................................................................
The red-headed trogon (Harpactes erythrocephalus) is a striking bird species found in the forests of South and Southeast Asia. It is known for its vivid appearance, with males displaying a bright crimson-red head, breast, and belly, complemented by a bold white band separating the red chest from the rich brown upperparts. The wings are black with intricate white barring, and the long, squared tail features blue-gray upper sides with bold black and white markings underneath. Females are more subdued in color, with olive-brown heads and duller plumage overall.

This trogon is primarily a forest-dwelling species, inhabiting subtropical and tropical rainforests, montane forests, and occasionally forest edges, typically at elevations ranging from 200 to 2,600 meters. It is often found perched quietly in dense foliage, where its stillness helps it remain undetected despite its bright coloration.

Red-headed trogons are insectivorous but also consume small fruits, making them an important part of the forest ecosystem. Their diet includes beetles, grasshoppers, caterpillars, and sometimes small reptiles. They are cavity-nesters, often using natural tree hollows or excavating soft, decayed wood to lay their eggs. Their soft, melodious calls add a distinctive charm to their forested habitats.

The Black Bittern is a medium-sized, secretive heron often found in densely vegetated wetlands and forests. With striking black plumage and contrasting pale yellow streaks running down its neck and chest, this bird is most active during dawn and dusk. Its stealthy behavior and camouflaging abilities make it challenging to spot, as it prefers to hide in thick undergrowth or reeds near water. In flight, the Black Bittern displays broad wings and a distinctive slow, deep wingbeat.

Often solitary, the Black Bittern can be found across parts of South and Southeast Asia, extending into northern Australia. It primarily feeds on fish, frogs, and insects, using its sharp bill to strike at prey with precision. The species' vocalizations are deep, guttural croaks, often heard during the breeding season.

Though elusive, the Black Bittern is a fascinating bird, well-adapted to its environment and capable of thriving in a variety of freshwater habitats.

World Vulture Awareness Day: Protecting Cambodia's Last 300 Vultures

Every year on the first Saturday of September, we celebrate World Vulture Awareness Day to raise awareness about these essential but often misunderstood birds. In 2024, it will fall on September 7th.

Vultures play a critical role in maintaining the health of our ecosystems by scavenging carcasses, preventing the spread of diseases, and recycling nutrients. Yet, vultures are facing a dire situation globally, including in Cambodia.

In Cambodia, we are home to three species of vultures: the White-rumped Vulture, the Slender-billed Vulture, and the Red-headed Vulture. Unfortunately, their numbers are alarmingly low, with only around 300 individuals remaining in the wild. These majestic birds, once a common sight soaring over the Cambodian skies, are now on the brink of extinction.

The decline in Cambodia's vulture population is primarily due to habitat loss, poisoning, and a decrease in available food. Vultures often feed on carcasses that may have been poisoned or treated with veterinary drugs, which are lethal to them. Additionally, as traditional livestock farming declines and fewer animals die in the wild, vultures struggle to find enough food to survive.

Now more than ever, we must take action to protect these vital scavengers. Conservation efforts, including vulture restaurants—designated feeding sites where safe food is provided—are helping to sustain the population. However, much more needs to be done to ensure the survival of Cambodia’s vultures.

Here’s how we can help:

- Raise Awareness: Educate others about the importance of vultures and their role in the ecosystem.

- Support Conservation Projects: Donate to or volunteer with local and international organizations working to save Cambodia’s vultures.

- Promote Safe Livestock Management: Encourage farmers to use vulture-friendly veterinary drugs and dispose of livestock carcasses responsibly.

- Protect Their Habitat: Advocate for the preservation of natural habitats where vultures can nest, feed, and thrive.

By protecting Cambodia’s last remaining vultures, we are not just saving a species—we are preserving the balance of our natural world. On this World Vulture Awareness Day, let’s come together to ensure that future generations will still see these incredible birds soaring across Cambodia’s skies.

The Lesser Adjutant is a large stork species scientifically known as *Leptoptilos javanicus*. It is native to parts of South and Southeast Asia, including Cambodia. This bird is characterized by its large size, bald head, and striking, long yellowish bill. Lesser Adjutants are often found in wetlands, grasslands, and forested areas where they feed on fish, amphibians, and small mammals.

Unfortunately, the Lesser Adjutant is classified as a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and hunting. Conservation efforts are critical to ensure the survival of this distinctive and important bird.
