Banteay Thom Temple (late 12th, early 13th century)
Banteay Thom is a medium size temple located about 2.1 kilometers due north of the northwest tower of Angkor Thom. Constructed during the reign of the energetic builder Jayavarman VII, it is unusual in that its main sanctuary comprises three towers laid out north-south, much in the manner of earlier brick shrines such as those at Koh Ker. The sanctuary courtyard also includes two small libraries which are in intact, though filled with centuries of debris. To the east of the temple are the remains of a small causeay and a gopura that marked the eastern edge of the temple's outer enclosure. ( #9 )..........

Samre Temple (built early-mid 12th century)

Banteay Samre is a compact and beautifully proportioned temple laid out during the reigns of Suryavarman II and Yasovarman II. It was probably built by a high-ranking official, not by the king, which was unusual but not unheard of (Prasat Kravan, also at Angkor, was another privately built temple). The temple stands about 500 meters east of the southeast corner of the (now dry) eastern baray. Its relative isolation prevents it from receiving as many tourists as the larger temples to the west, although the quality of the bas-reliefs and stonework is among the best at Angkor. In fact, the temple was originally believed to have been erected in the 15th century as the quality of its design suggested that was built at the apex of Khmer artistry and technological know-how.

The layout of Banteay Samre is similar in many respects to other temples built in the reign of Suryavarman II, including Chau Say Tevoda, Thommanon, and Angkor Wat. Similar features include the distinctive shape of the central sanctuary's tower, along with the mandapa (antechamber) connected to the central shrine via an antarala (small corridor). The layout and positioning of the 'libraries' is also a common feature, as is the series of galleries encircling the temple's core pavilions. One curious omission at Banteay Samre is the lack of apsara bas-reliefs, which were used extensively in the other major temples of Suryavarman's era.( #8)

Prei Temple (late 12th, early 13th-century)

Banteay Prei, the "Citadel of the Forest", is a small Buddhist temple is located about 300 meters northwest of the Jayatataka Baray (the reservoir of Preah Khan Temple). It was built during the reign of Jayavarman VII and is stylistically similar to nearby Preah Khan and Ta Prohm temples. However, it is relatively small, with its outer enclosure measuring about 150 x 200 meters, inside of which is a moat measuring 80 x 60 meters. At the center of the ensemble is the temple's inner enclosure which is only 25 x 30 meters in size. ....( #7 )

Chamkrong Temple (947)

Baksei Chamkrong is a small pyramid temple located just to the south of Angkor Thom. It was constructed in 947 by King Harshavarman and is dedicated to Shiva. Measuring 27 meters on each side, the temple rises in 4 tiers of laterite surmounted by a single tower with an entrance facing east. The jambs on the entrance include two well-preserved inscriptions which give the precise date and time of the temple's dedication—9:40 AM on the morning of Wednesday, February 23, 948. The text also indicates that the shrine was built in honor of Shiva and his spouse Devi and to memorialize King Harshavarman I's parents. It goes on to celebrate earlier Khmer kings including Jayavarman II, the founder of the Khmer empire, along with the mythological hero Kambu whose marriage to Mera spawned the Khmer people.....( #5)

Kdei Temple

Banteay Kdei Temple (mid 12th-early 13th centuries)
Banteay Kdei is a mysterious temple. There is no record of why it was built—or by whom—as no inscriptions have have ever been found at the site. Its name means 'The citadel of the monks' cells', but that does not necessarily indicate its function. What is known is that Banteay Kdei grew by amalgamation from a small site to a large central temple with its own enclosure wall that protected a large city...( #6 )

Wat Temple

Angkor Wat is a spectacular temple in central Cambodia, built by the vanished Khmer empire. It was constructed during the reign of King Suryavarman II, who ruled from 1113 to at least 1145. In those days, it was customary for the Khmer Empire to maintain a state temple at the heart of the city. However, when Suryavarman assumed power, the existing Baphuon state temple was dedicated to Shiva. Suryavarman worshiped Vishnu, and wished to honor him with a new temple south of the existing capital. This new state temple came to be called Angkor Wat, meaning "The city that is a temple.".....( #4)

Thom South Gate (late 12th-early 13th centuries)

Angkor Thom is quadrangle of defensive walls totaling 12 kilometers that once protected the Khmer capital of the same name (Angkor Thom means 'Great City'). Built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries by King Jayavarman VII, the walls are divided by two axes running north-south and east-west. A gateway lies at the end of each axis, four in total, facing the four cardinal directions. An additional gate, called the 'Gate of Victory', pierces the east wall just north of the 'Gate of the Dead', the east gate along the central axis. The significance of the additional gate is that it provided access to a terrace of the royal palace. As for the other gates, the two axes intersect at the center of the enclosed area where the Bayon temple sits....( #3 )

Thom Gate of the Dead (12th - 13th centuries)

Jayavarman VII's 'Great City' (the meaning of Angkor Thom) enclosed an area of about 9 square kilometers, and could only be entered through five gates. On the north, south, and west, only one gate provided access, whereas the east side enjoyed one gate leading to the royal palace (the so-called Victory Gate) and another gate to the south now known as the Gate of the Dead. Tradition holds that the name derives from the custom of the gate only being used when transporting a king to his funeral, but there is no historical evidence for this. More likely the gate simply served as the east entrance to Angkor Thom with the Victory Gate providing direct entry to the Royal Palace and surrounding environs..... ( #1 )

Pean Temple
Constructed in roughly the same period as Preah Khan, Neak Pean offers a different view altogether. Located in the center of the Northern Baray, this temple is essentially an island and most impressive to view in the wet season. The long raised wooden causeway leading to the temple is surrounded by water and submerged tree trunks lend the scene a ghostly appearance. This is a day tour allowing plenty of time to explore and ask questions. About 2km the north of Neak Pean, visit East Mebon with five towers represent the five peaks of the mythical Mount Meru. It was built in 952 by king Rajendravarman II, dedicated to Siva (Hindu), an ancestor temple in memory of the parents of the king. With following the Pre Rup style art, Pre Rup was built in 961 by the King Rajendraman II dedicated to the god Siva (Hindi). Pre Rup was regarded as having funerary associations. The name Prerup recalls one of the rituals of cremation in which the silhouette of the body of the deceased, outlined with its ashes, is successively represented.

Wat Temple

Rising from the jungle as the star of the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park, the Angkor Wat temple complex is a 12th-century engineering marvel. Look out for intricate carvings of nymphs dancing on columns in shadowy hallways, serpent-topped balustrades, and huge, chiseled bas-reliefs depicting Khmer Empire battles. Although intended as a microcosm of the universe, it’s difficult to get lost here, with the complex arranged on three easy-to-navigate tiers.

Mealea Temple

Beng Mealea Temple was built as a Hindu temple, but some carvings depict Buddhist motifs. It's primary material is sandstone and it is largely unrestored, with trees and thick brush thriving amidst its towers and courtyards and many of its stones lying in great heaps. For years it was difficult to reach, but a road recently built to the temple complex of Koh Ker passes Beng Mealea and more visitors are coming to the site, as it is 77 km from Siem Reap by road.
