A door guardian statue from Tonle Snguot temple, an ancient hospital, is on display at the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum after being repaired.

SiemReap: A sandstone door guardian statue, 1.82 meters high, 0.78 meters wide, and 0.5 meters thick, has been repaired and displayed in the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum.

The head of the exhibition team and the guide at the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum, Mr. Kun Phally, said that the door guardian statue was broken into six different pieces, such as the head, body, arms, legs, and earrings. The face was also eroded, almost losing the shape of the lips, nose, and eyes. After the team studied the history of the statue, the decoration, and the size of the damage, both inside and outside, the experts used the repair technique according to each stage and reconnected to the original form. In addition, to keep the door guardian statue stable and secure, the team also made a new sandstone pedestal and prepared a poster about the history of the statue on display in the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum for visitors to study and understand the evolution of Khmer art history.

This huge door guardian statue was found during excavations in 2017 at the Tonle Snguot temple, an ancient Angkorian hospital in the north of the former city of Angkor Thom, now located in Nokor Krao village. Kork Chak, Siem Reap city. Researchers have speculated that the statue may have been built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries AD.

Kun Phally explained that the first door guardian statue of Khmer art was found on the brick walls of the Sambor Prei K*k group of temples during the 7th-8th centuries AD. Later, the door guardian statue became more popular and evolved into a single door in the Pre-Rup style during the 10th century AD and continued to King Jayavarman VII from 1181 to 1220 AD. In general, the single-door guardian statue in the reign of King Jayavarman VII was big and tall on the body, adorned with ornaments such as crowns, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and ankles. In the hand of the door guardian statue holding a trident but this guardian statue holding a long stick.

SiemReap: the restoration team from the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology of the APSARA National Authority is repairing and strengthening the platform around the southwestern tower of the Lolei temple.
During the restoration work, the team collected the broken and rotten bricks, reassembled them, and used the mortar to fill in the gaps to prevent water seepage and other pests.
This is part of the conservation work that the APSARA National Authority has been carrying out regularly to preserve the 1,200-year-old Lolei temple, which will remain strong for a long time.

APSARA National Authority to cooperate with the University of Hawaii to excavate the western area of Angkor Wat

APSARA National Authority and the University of Hawaii have collaborated to study the evolution of "Theravada Buddhism", focusing on the evolution of the local community from the pre-Angkor to the post-Angkor period when the "pagoda" replaced the Angkorian temple, becoming the core of the community. According to LiDAR data, settlements in the northwestern area of Angkor Wat in the 12th century were demolished around the post-Angkor period.
Mr. Tin Tina, Deputy Director of the Department of Research, Training, and Communication of APSARA National Authority said that APSARA National Authority has cooperated with the University of Hawaii to excavate to find out the reasons for the changes in urban structure and population in the Angkor area from the 13th century onwards. Therefore, in response to the above objectives, the research team opened 20 excavation pits measuring 1x2m at the mounds and ponds in the Angkor Wat temple complex. In addition, to obtain more data, researchers have dug another 104 pits. This research project started on 21 November 2022 to 20 January 2023.

Mr. Tina explained that the data obtained from this excavation allows us to understand the human community in Angkor, which may respond to several major historical factors, such as the transition to Buddhism, the decline of Angkor civilization, and the move of the capital to the south (around Phnom Penh) and the short time return of the kingdom power in the 16th century.
He added that in 2019-2020, the research team of both institutions also conducted excavations in Daun Pok, Kork Bak, and Kork Kong in the area of Wat Athvea, Kork Roka, and Kork Prey Ampil in the area of Wat Chetdei as well as Kork Prey Ampil L**h in the area of Wat Prey Pdao. The purpose of this excavation was to collect data from communities living in rural areas of Angkor.

Dr. Heng Pipal, Archeologist at the University of Hawaii and head of the research project, said the excavation was aimed at exploring the changing structure of the city. This scientific change was related to the landscape (general landscape), and how the topography that people used to live has changed. In terms of major histories, such as the conversion of Hinduism to Mahayana Buddhism and Theravada Buddhism in the 13th century, what impact did it have on the people who once lived in the Angkor site and the countryside around Angkor? On the other hand, the historical event that we have known for a long time was the change of Angkor, whether it was the abandonment of Angkor or not.

From 21 November 2022 to 17 January 2023, researchers from the APSARA National Authority and experts from the University of Hawaii in the United States excavated 20 archeological pits. In the excavation pits, the laterite foundations of the Theravada Buddhism pagoda were found, with sandstone boundary stones (Bai Sema) encircling them in eight directions, as well as pottery fragments and charcoal fragments used by ancient people. These samples can be used to experiment to get the answers in the future.

Since 2013, researchers have been digging in the eastern mounds of Angkor Wat, finding grapefruit peels, rice, and cotton seeds left over from ancient times.

An asura head statue found at the Angkor Thom's south gate

SiemReap: Officials of the APSARA National Authority found the asura head statue on 19 October 2022, after arranging the location of the former stalls of traders in front of the south gate of Angkor Thom.

Chhouk Somala, head of the registration team of the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology of the APSARA National Authority, said that the asura head statue was found at the location of the former souvenir stalls in front of the south gate of Angkor Thom. After moving the stalls to the new parking lot in front of Phnom Bakheng, the team went down to clean up and also found this asura head statue.

Mr. Somala added that at first, the team dug 30 to 40 cm deep and found three pieces of ancient stone, then the team washed, and assembled them to become the asura head. A single asura case, 60 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 59 cm thick. The sandstone asura head found are in the Bayon style. Currently, the team has brought this head statue to the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum to be cleaned and repaired properly and the team will study to find the original body of the statue before being reassembled.

He confirmed that according to the villagers, the place where the head of the asura was found was the restoration site of Angkor Thom's south gate in the French period. The examination at that location shows that there are some fragments of the statues left there.

It should be noted that APSARA National Authority plans to rearrange the public order at the above location. Therefore, excavations and registration of statues at the site will continue to find more lost statues, so they can be reassembled in the future.

A piece of Bayon style naga head sculpture found underneath the ground

Recently, a sandstone naga head was accidentally spotted when a large tree collapsed, causing pieces of naga head buried in the ground for many years to emerge from the tree's roots in the area of Wat Tep Pranom, Angkor Thom.

Mr. Chhouk Somala, Head of the art registration team of the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology of the APSARA National Authority, said that the naga head sculpture was buried in the ground about half a meter deep. When the tree collapsed, the naga head sculpture was found in the tree's roots. Mr. Somala added that the fragment of the naga head sculpture was the upper head, which was 1.2 meters long, 1 meter wide, and 0.3 meters thick.

Mr. Chhouk Somala concluded that the naga head sculpture could be removed from the Bayon temple, but did not know for what purpose and when. He added that such sculptures were often seen in the Bayon style during the reign of Jayavarman VII, who combined Naga and Garuda. Perhaps it was used to express the idea of religious unification between Brahmanism and Buddhism, so the king asked the architects to combine Naga and Garuda and display them in his temples.

To keep the pieces of the naga head sculpture safe, the APSARA National Authority cooperated with the Heritage Protection Police and the tourism agent to make a record and hand over the piece to be kept at the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum for registration and cleaning as well as search for other data related to this naga head sculpture, so it is easy to put it back to its original location.

Kampong Phluk (Khmer: កំពង់ភ្លុក)

Kampong Phluk is a commune in Prasat Bakong District in Siem Reap Province Cambodia. The name means "Harbor of the Tusks". The community largely depends on fishing for survival, primarily shrimp, spending Cambodia's wet season (May-October) fishing.
Many houses and buildings are constructed on stilts ranging from 6 m to 9 m to accommodate the changes in water level between wet and dry seasons.
During the dry season (November-April) as the river thins due to receding water, many turn to farming to supplement their income. Tourism, which started in the village approximately 10 years ago, is also a growing part of the local economy.
As of 2019, the commune has 911 families with a total population of 3,707. The commune consist of three villages: Tnaot Kambot (ត្នោតកំបុត), Dey Krahom (ដីក្រហម), and Kok Kdol (គោគក្ដុល).
is a cluster of three villages of stilted houses built within the floodplain about 16 km southeast of Siem Reap. The villages are primarily Khmer and have about 3000 inhabitants between them. Flooded mangrove forest surrounds the area and is home to a variety of wildlife including crab-eating macaques. During the dry season when the lake is low, the buildings in the villages seem to soar atop their 6-meter stilts exposed by the lack of water. At this time of year many of the villagers move out onto the lake and build temporary houses. In the wet season when water level rises, the villagers move back to their permanent houses on the floodplain, the stilts now hidden under the water. Kampong Phluk's economy is, as one might expect, based in fishing, primary in shrimp harvesting.

Kampong Phluk sees comparatively few foreign visitors and offers a close look at the submerged forest and lakeside village life. The area can be reached by boat from the Chong Khneas or by road. Make arrangements through your guesthouse of tour operator, or charter a boat at the Chong Khneas docks. During the wet season, drive to Roluos village just off Route #6 east of Siem Reap and then take a boat through the flooded forest the rest of the way. During the dry season the road is clear, making the boat unnecessary. Much of the road has recently been improved, now paved most of the way.

Kompong Phluk Floating Village is a permanent village opposed to floating, And it's about 25 kilometers east of Chong Khneas. Here is a much better option for you to visit a village on the lake. Kompong Phluk is accessible by boat only. Kompong Phluk is a relatively small village that provides very good insight into the village lifestyle of the Tonle Sap. This village exists almost exclusively on fishing and related activities. Houses are built on stilts up to 10 m high, and the village is surrounded by flooded forest.
