Basseterre is a beautiful, multi-cultured city that is surrounded by lush rainforest and mountains. Kitts, the name Basseterre came from the French and translates into lowlands. But, what makes this area unique is its eclectic history and the many architectural influences that were the result. Colonized by the French, fought over and claimed by the British, destroyed and rebuilt numerous times due
to wars and weather, it is now home to many of the rich and famous and all these influences come together for an experience you won't soon forget. Kitts once depended on upon sugar for its main source of income, tourism has now replaced sugar as the main source of revenue. This lovely island was also host to the World Cricket Cup back in 2007, which makes the country of St. Kitts and Nevis the smallest country to host a world cup event. But, the fact that many of its citizens are quite wealthy has also contributed to the beauty and upkeep of the city of Basseterre. The grid-like pattern of the city with its combination of architectural styles make it a must see for those who love to sight see. There is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park for those who'd like to explore outside of the city. The government even built a road that goes all the way around the island, which makes sightseeing even more pleasant.
