🌀 Hurricane Alert for the Cayman Islands

On the advice of the Director General of the Cayman Islands National Weather Service and the Director of Hazard Management Cayman Islands, Acting Deputy Governor Eric Bush, in his capacity as Acting Chairman of the National Hazard Management Council, has placed the Cayman Islands under a Hurricane Alert as of 8:00 pm tonight, 30 June 2024.

What does this mean?

✅ A Hurricane Alert signifies that a hurricane poses a potential threat within the next 48-72 hours.

✅ Residents are urged to remain vigilant, stay informed through official government channels, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

Key Preparedness Tips:

✅ Emergency Kit: Assemble an emergency kit that includes water, non-perishable food, medications, important documents, batteries, flashlights, and other essentials.
✅ Secure Property: Bring outdoor furniture, decorations, and garbage cans inside. Secure windows and doors with shutters or plywood.
✅ Evacuation Plan: Familiarise yourself with local evacuation routes and have a plan in place for where you will go if an evacuation order is issued.
✅ Communicate: Stay in contact with family and friends. Let them know your plans.
✅ Fuel and Power: Ensure your vehicles are fully fueled and that you have backup power sources.

Safety and Recovery Measures:

The government is taking comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and recovery of all residents. Emergency response teams are on standby, shelters are being prepared, and resources are being allocated to manage potential impacts. We urge all residents to take this alert seriously and to prepare accordingly.

The Cayman Islands National Weather Service has issued a Severe Weather Bulletin for Monday, 5 February through Tuesday, 6 February.

A strong cold front is forecasted to enter the Cayman Islands area, bringing elevated marine conditions with waves reaching 4-6 feet and gale-force winds.

Cayman Thanksgiving is celebrated on the first Sunday of December each year, at the end of the Atlantic hurricane season.

Throughout history, the Cayman Islands has navigated many severe hurricanes, most notably the '32 storm, Hurricane Ivan (2004) and Hurricane Paloma (2008). In these moments of challenges, we've embraced gratitude and resilience.

Established in 2010, Cayman Thanksgiving serves as a reminder for us to pause and appreciate life, Cayman style. This includes preparing and eating our traditional foods, enjoying our beautiful beaches, attending church with family and practising mindfulness in the presence of loved ones.
