Joining my niece and nephew on their first scuba dive!

As teaching family can add extra stress and complications, we decided it was best to do the Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) with an another instructor instead of ‘uncle Menno’. I did of course prep them thoroughly!

We went with the excellent at their beautiful house reef at Marie Pompoen.

After some great theory and skills practice, the kids were very comfortable in no time in the water.

This is my niece , like she’s been doing it for years. Under close supervision by David from The Dive Bus, my job was very easy just keeping an extra pair of eyes out on her.

Ticked off a bucket list item!

For about 25 years a visit to the National Museum of the US Air Force has been on my ‘bucket list’.
As many of you know I have many ‘nerdy’ interests with aviation being one of them. The museum is one of the largest in the world and has many, many, and then even some more unique aircraft in its collection. The museum is however in Dayton (Ohio) so not on many tourist itineraries... Being in the US for a bit, found a cheap ticket and decided to go for it.

I won’t bore you with too many nerdy plane pics. Just one special one. Ever since seeing a picture of it as a 10 year old kid I was fascinated by the space-age looking XB-70 Valkyrie. A Mach 3 bomber project that never went into production. The museum houses the only prototype left of the two produced. A childhood dream fulfilled and I felt like that 10 year old kid again.

Being a tourist at South Beach for an evening.

After getting a bit of ‘cabin fever’ as the Florida rains kept me inside, I decided to take myself out.
Hadn’t been in South Beach for a while, so went there to have a drink, burger and some people watching.

There were still some rainshowers passing through making for some nice gloomy skies.

Here is something you won’t see too often! As most know my buddy James from Divers Ready has a preference to dive ‘rusty metal’ over ‘wet rocks’.

So here a Divers Ready! shirt makes a very rare appearance at a Mexican cenote.

Thanks to ProTec Dive Centers and .totola in introducing me to this new for me diving environment. I especially enjoyed our second day at the spectacular Dreamgate cenote.

Good chance you will see this particular famous one-of-a-kind orange shirt popping up in Mexico again….

Looking forward to trying something I wanted to do for a while - looking at some wet rocks!

I just arrived in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. For many a party beach town to have a good time. For divers the starting point to explore the famous cenotes and caves of the Yucatan peninsula.

Having seen many divers have their lives and careers forever changed by the lure of the caves, they have always intrigued me. At the same time, I am not always at my most comfortable in confined environments. So I’m just going to start with a few days of guided cenote diving as a ‘taster’ so to say. From there I can decide if this is a direction I want to further pusue.

Spent my Easter Sunday with a little shore dive off Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. Great to be back in the water with again!

Was just a short walk from home to the beach using the beach customized wheelbarrow. And brought some deck chairs for that important after-dive relax.

Was a great shore dive, with several sightings of one my favorite fish, the juvenile spotted drum. Including the smallest one I ever saw, about the size of the nail of my pinky finger!

So my social media is a bit behind… still sorting out some of my Caribbean highlights.

Saba is a great island to get some hikes in. The trails are well marked, and length and difficulty levels cater for a wide range of hikers. As I was on the island for only a few days, I couldn’t do them all.

But some of my favorites were firstly the short but steep hike on ‘The Ladder’. This was the way people and supplies got on the island in the days of old. Do the hike once, and you’ll have new found respect for the tenacity to choose to live on Saba.

The second one, and the ‘signature’ hike of Saba is to the top of Mt. Scenery. The highest top of The Netherlands. And with clear weather some stunning views of the island, the sea and surrounding islands.
