The Cayman Islands National Museum is located in the most historic building in central George Town, a remarkable structure that is approximately 180 years old.
As the oldest public building in the Cayman Islands, it stands as one of the few remaining 19th-century edifices on the islands. Originally thought to be the first purpose-built courthouse and jailhouse, it has adapted over the years to serve various functions, including the first post office, early Commissioner's offices, a public library, and a savings bank.
The Old Courts Building played a vital role in the community, doubling as a schoolroom, church hall, and dance hall for town meetings and events. In the 1970s, after a new courthouse was erected, the building transitioned into the offices for the Lands and Survey Department, which continued until 1986 when it was officially designated to become the National Museum.
