The starfish of the Cayman Islands, particularly the Red Cushion or West Indian sea star (Oreaster reticulatus) at Starfish Point in the North Sound of Grand Cayman, are a beloved natural tourism and recreational resource to the Cayman Islands.

Echinoderms including starfish, sea eggs/urchins, sea cucumbers and sand dollars are protected species and may not be taken from Cayman waters at any time.

Stingrays are opportunistic feeders most of the time, lying in wait for their next meal to happen by. They often eat sea creatures that live on or near the ocean floor, such as crabs, mollusks and shrimp. Hiding gives stingrays the ability to wait until their prey gets close, then scoop up the tasty morsel with little effort. While stingrays are predators in their own right, they are also preyed upon by other predators, including hammerhead sharks, killer whales and large carnivorous fish. Hiding helps protect the stingrays from their predators.

The frigatebird is sometimes called the “man-o-war bird” because it harasses other birds until they regurgitate recently captured food, which the frigatebird snatches in midair.

Typically, they travel large distances and their foraging area is very expansive. But here on Grand Cayman you can certainly find them at the Stingray City sandbar everyday of the week.

Nursery Grounds
Many marine species can be found, during their early life stages, living in mangroves, using towering roots as refuge from predators and a source of food. With low competition, species such as shrimp, grouper, and many other fish are able to grow and develop before venturing into adjoining reefs or the open ocean where they complete the rest of their life cycles

Females reproduce annually. This species gives live birth 2-10 pups after a pregnancy which usually lasts between seven and eight months. Parental care ceases once the young are born.
