Shangri Lao, Luang Prabang - Laos

Shangri Lao, Luang Prabang - Laos Follow the footsteps of an french explorer in luxury tents with breathtanking views Background

In the journals of the great explorer Dr. P.

Neis, Laos was described as a land covered with lush primary jungle. Today the natural resources of the Lao P.D.R. are suffering from the fast rising numbers of its population, especially in remote areas, where education and the use of sustainable agricultural techniques are lacking. The traditional slash and burn activities consume huge areas of Jungle and these areas provide only little harvest

for a short period of time , which will eventually leave Laos without any natural forests. One of Shangi Lao’s goals as a possible sustainable tourism provider, offers one solution to this problem by leading tourists through natural areas. This can be seen as an example of good practice for the local people, on how to earn money in a sustainable way, without cutting down natural areas. Based just 12 Km from Luang Phabang the concept and aim of the ‘Shangri Lao Expedition’, is not only to give our customers a unique and authentic experience of an old colonial-style camp and expedition, but also to preserve natural areas and give former logging elephants an alternative way to earn their living using professional guidance from Lao and Foreign specialists. If we don’t protect the Huay Sae and Huay Khot areas (more than 300 hectares of primary jungle), it would be almost certain that timber merchants and quarry suppliers would completely destroy these areas documented as “marvelous” by Dr P. Neis - one of the great explorers of the 19th century in whose footsteps we will follow. Thus our customers can be sure, that they, during their enjoyment of their unique adventure, will help to preserve those areas for the next and future generations and support elephants for a better future.

From a very well known travel company's travel brochure.

We had to have a meeting with them and show them around our camp to show them how well we treat our elephants.

We are always very happy to do this because we spend so much time, effort and money looking after them; we want as many people as possible to see :)

We have featured in one of TripAdvisor's exclusively commissioned blog posts!

We are featured on Day 3 where the writer says:

"There are too many agencies offering elephant safaris in Luang Prabang to mention them all, but I can say that there are few better places in Asia to try your hand at riding an elephant than here at Elephant Village. I'm always impressed by the high quality of animal welfare whenever I visit."

So that makes us very happy :)

So our sister company Elephant Village, has been awarded with another TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for 2015.

Although we don't like to blow our own trumpet (actually sometimes we do!), this is the 4th year in a row that we have been awarded it!

We appreciate all the feedback we get, both good and bad, because it helps us to improve our camp to make it even better for everyone else.

We are also very happy that proves that sustainable tourism, care and love for the environment & animals and great experience can go together and are not mutually exclusive :)

For the adventurous only of course!!!
