International tourism was expected to reach 65% of pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2022, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, with some areas recently reaching levels closer to 80% or 90% of their 2019 arrivals. And experts are cautiously optimistic about a continued travel rebound.

Many travelers are charging full steam ahead into the new year -- with good reason.

Sharing borders with Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Myanmar, landlocked Laos has long been a must-hit spot for time-rich travelers making their way through the Southeast Asia circuit.
But now, thanks to the 2021 opening of a semi-high-speed railway, it's easier than ever to get around the country at a quicker pace, shaving hours off journeys that previously took full days to travel.
You're still going to have to make some hard choices -- there's a lot to see in Laos.
Towering karst peaks await visitors to adventure-haven Vang Vieng, while UNESCO-listed Luang Prabang is filled with French-colonial heritage, Buddhist ritual and natural beauty. (Luxury seekers will want to check into the Rosewood Luang Prabang, with its stylish hilltop tents)
The mysterious Plain of Jars, a megalithic archaeological site, can be found in the Xiangkhoang Plateau. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience that makes a difference, head for Bokeo Province and join one of the Gibbon Experience's overnight treks. Guests of this tourism-based conservation project spend the night in the world's tallest treehouses -- only accessible by zipline -- among wild, black-crested gibbons. -- KC

Starbucks brings welcoming third place to Laos as it opens first store in Vientiane

As part of the Starbucks brandโ€™s continued expansion across Southeast Asia, Coffee Concepts Limited, a subsidiary of Maximโ€™s Caterers Limited, today opened the doors to the first Starbucks store in Laos, representing Starbucks 15th market in the Asia Pacific region* and 84th market globally. Located in the capital city of Vientiane, the store opening reaffirms Starbucks long-term commitment to continued growth across Asia with more than 12,000 stores in the region.
Known for its rich history in coffee production, Laos is a market with a thriving coffee culture. The new store adds to this by offering a warm and familiar coffeehouse experience alongside Starbucks signature handcrafted beverages. Inspired by the layers and symmetry of Laosโ€™ architecture, the store is designed to bring the coffee experience and our brand heritage to life. The handcrafted, textured door handle welcomes customers with an authentic touch from the moment they enter the store. The ceiling of the entire store is covered with Siren scale wood tiles, mimicking the brandโ€™s signature Siren and the historical housing architecture in Laos. Ceiling tiles are adorned with botanical wood craft, inspired by coffee plants and the natural scenery of the country, creating a welcoming, yet familiar third place for customers.
As the Starbucks brand expands into Laos, the company is committed to using its scale for good and creating a positive impact in every community it serves. Guided by the Starbucks Mission and Values, Starbucks is committed to attracting and retaining an industry-leading team of partners, and creating opportunities to develop fulfilling careers in the coffee industry.

Lao Traditional Sport
Name of sport (game)
Tikhy or Tikhee
Name in native language
Tikhy or Tikhee; also called Lao hockey
Place of practice (continent, state, nation)
Laos

History
Tikhy is a traditional sport (similar to hockey) and is a distinctive part of an annual That Luang Festival, being an inseparable part of the celebration. The That Luang Festival is one of the most significant Buddhist festivals in Laos and takes place during lunar eclipse which occurs in October or November (depending of the cycle of lunar calendar). It is a joyous event, which is not only attended by town residents but also numerous tourists who visit Vientiane at that time.

Traditional game of "tikhy" or "tikhee" is played between a team consisted of festival participants (local people) and a team consisted of civil servants, which in the past were dressed in red. The game starts with a procession, before the game starts, master of ceremonies leads the local people, holding a magbeng, to bring the ball (Louk khee) from the Town Hall where it is being stored. The modern ball is made of bamboo roots and has a spherical shape and golden colour. After that, the whole procession gather near That Luang Stupa and circle it three times. Then they bring the ball to the pitch while everyone gathers to watch the match. This is a variation of Lao hockey, in which the participants use a bamboo sticks to direct the ball into the opposite goal. It requires a certain set of skills, as the bamboo sticks are not in a perfect shape and the ball is not perfectly round and smooth. Each team consists of 50 members, half of which plays in the first part while the other halt plays in the second part. Each of them lasts 25 minutes.
Winning the game means that the people will not suffer from hunger, while luck and prosperity will be with them for the whole year. The game is being held in a rather positive spirit in order to enhance the relation between local people and civil servants. The participants are cheered on by the crowd, which does not strain from dances and singing.

It is the anniversary of the beginning of unrest against British rule in 1920 that eventually led to independence in 1948. Specifically, it is the date of the first student strike at Rangoon (now Yangon) University. Further strikes occurred in 1935 and 1938, and these strikes served to rouse national identity and opposition to British colonial policies.

The exact date of National Day changes each year since it is based on the Burmese Calendar system. In Myanmar, the year 2015 is known as the year 1377, and there are 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days each. This only adds up to 354 days, so an extra โ€œmake up monthโ€ is added every three years to catch up with the solar calendar. However, to make things align properly, it is sometimes added every two years instead. The date falls on the 10th day after the first full moon of the month Tazaungmon, which means that National Day can be anywhere from mid-November to early December.

The history leading up to the student revolt is the background of National Day. In 1824, the British conquered Burma. In 1886, Burma was added to British India, being a separate province within that realm. In 1919, Buddhist monks attempted to physically force Europeans out of a pagoda when they refused to remove their shoes before entering. This incident helped fuel the fire leading up to the student revolt. Finally, on December 5th, 1920, unpopular new British regulations led the students at Rangoon University to protest. Soon, the protests spread throughout the land to other schools. Ultimately, the unrest continued until independence was granted on December 4th, 1948.

While National Day is marked on the Myanmar calendar, it is not necessarily in itself a major time of public celebrations. Instead, many who feel the political situation in Myanmar is reminiscent of that of colonial times take to the streets to protest against the current ruling military power. Recently, free elections have been scheduled in Myanmar, after 25 years of military rule, so perhaps, this situation will change. Monks, students, and expatriates all are typically a part of the National Day protests, and there are often cries on this day for a new revolution.

On 24 November 2021, the UN General Assembly has adopted resolution A/76/L.6/Rev.1, Graduation of Bangladesh, the Lao Peopleโ€™s Democratic Republic and Nepal from the least developed country category. The three countries will graduate from the LDC category after an exceptionally extended preparatory period of five years (the standard period is of three years) to enable them to prepare for graduation while planning for a post-COVID-19 recovery and implementing policies and strategies to reverse the economic and social damage incurred by the COVID-19 shock.
