TEDxHamra Salon

TEDxHamra Salon What is TEDx? At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. What's TED?

TEDxHamraSalon is a local forum of monthly salons that aim to connect people both to ideas and to each other in an intimate environment, with the hopes of inspiring people to change their lives, their futures and ultimately their world. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx - local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experie

nce. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with the annual TED Conference in Long Beach, California, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK, TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Program, the new TEDx community program.

We often tend to think of political systems, or any system, as fixed: either it works or it doesn't. What if, instead, we thought of political systems as always needing to evolve based on our own evolving needs and awareness.

Can we tailor-make a democracy or other political system that works for us today?

In this talk, Max Rashbrooke explores just that.

https://www.ted.com/talks/max_rashbrooke_3_ways_to_upgrade_democracy_for_the_21st_century

Democracy needs an update -- one that respects and engages citizens by involving them in everyday political decisions, says writer and researcher Max Rashbrooke. He outlines three global success stories that could help move democratic systems forward and protect society against the new challenges th...

In the past decades, we have created systems that address (or fail to) problems as isolated issues. Except, they're not. From the collapse of economic systems around the world to the current pandemic, climate change and growing inequalities, all these issues are deeply interconnected.

So although climate change may seem like an irrelevant topic in a community combating economic collapse and corruption, perhaps we need to shift perspective.

For the first time, TED is organizing a live global COUNTDOWN event online for the public featuring more than 50 speakers in five curated sessions. The session will entail a blend of actionable and research-backed ideas, cutting-edge science, and moments of wonder and inspiration.

Tune in on 10.10.2020 on TED's channel on YouTube.

Countdown is a global initiative to champion and accelerate solutions to the climate crisis, turning ideas into action. The goal: cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and to net zero by 2050, at the latest.

What does a vision of a wildly different future look like?

It's up to us. We have to dream it up together.

In Naomi Klein's talk- link to talk shared in a previous post below- she suggests a few proposed visions from a manifesto she wrote alongside indigenous elders, climate change activists, faith leaders, and many others from different backgrounds, called 'The Leap'.

If you, like us, got curious about 'The Leap', a possible picture of the world we're fighting for, here is more:

https://theleap.org/

What does your transformed future look like?

The Leap exists to inject new urgency and bold ideas into confronting the intersecting crises of our time: climate change, racism and inequality.

Shocking events, like the Beirut blast of August 4th, have the potential to push a society backwards...or to create transformative positive change. What factors determine which of the two outcomes an event will lead to? How much of that is in our own hands as a community?

In this talk, Naomi Klein shares the ingredients that create positive change after a crisis. This talk was also screened during the recent TED Circles event hosted by TEDxLondon that our team was a part of.

Things are pretty shocking out there right now -- record-breaking storms, deadly terror attacks, thousands of migrants disappearing beneath the waves and openly supremacist movements rising. Are we responding with the urgency that these overlapping crises demand from us? Journalist and activist Naom...

On Friday, August 21, 2020, Sir Ken Robinson passed away, leaving behind a beautiful legacy. Throughout his extraordinary life, he pushed the boundaries of what education is and can be, sharing revolutionary insights on creativity and innovation in education. He taught us how to honour the organic process through which humans grow and develop and to courageously step into the uncertainty that comes with it. His parting is a loss for the world.

Now, more than ever is a time to step into that uncertainty, to rethink our education systems, and to muster the courage to experiment with an organic process that is not guaranteed but is essential to come back to our humanity, more fully, more deeply.

May you rest in peace, Sir Ken Robinson.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Sir Ken Robinson died peacefully yesterday, 21st August 2020, surrounded by family after a short battle with cancer.

We will be following up with a further update as we begin to follow Sir Ken’s wishes and honour his legacy.

After hearing about the recent explosion in Beirut and feeling moved by the way our community mobilized into immediate action to support those affected by the devastation, TEDxLondon reached out to us to connect our two communities in a shared conversation around how crises can affect longstanding change.

TEDxLondon is inviting us, and you, to a virtual TED Circles event that will take place via webinar on Tuesday 25th August, 8:30 - 10:00 pm around the theme of ‘How Change Happens’.

The program includes watching one TED talk, an informal discussion in small break-out groups, supported by TEDxLondon and TEDxHamra facilitators, followed by a short conversation with TEDxHamra curator, Sara Sibai, on the current situation in Beirut.

So come ready to learn, share your perspective and connect with new faces!

Please note that this is not a drop-in event: it starts at 8:30pm EEST and ends at 10:00pm.

Our heart goes out to all those suffering the loss of loved ones and homes due to the explosion in Beirut on Tuesday evening.

The response of care and love is evident on the streets with countless initiatives, volunteers, and opened homes and hotels for those who are shelterless.

We encourage everyone who can to help out in small and big ways, with their time, their brooms, food, water, and even garbage bags. Together, we can, and will, rebuild the city.

"If we want a new economics, all we have to do is choose to have it."

In this powerful talk, Nick Hanauer, one of the top 0.1% of earners, shares the ‘dirty’ secret behind neoliberal capitalism and explores how we can leave neoliberalism behind and build a more sustainable, prosperous, and equitable society.

https://www.ted.com/talks/nick_hanauer_the_dirty_secret_of_capitalism_and_a_new_way_forward

Rising inequality and growing political instability are the direct result of decades of bad economic theory, says entrepreneur Nick Hanauer. In a visionary talk, he dismantles the mantra that "greed is good" -- an idea he describes as not only morally corrosive, but also scientifically wrong -- and....

"Growing your own food is like printing your own money."

Sometimes, when reality is bleak, you've got to manufacture your own reality. In this talk, Ron Finley shares his story of taking back his neighborhood by growing food for the community on street corners, in homeless shelters, in empty lots...basically anywhere he could, without waiting for permission.

https://www.ted.com/talks/ron_finley_a_guerrilla_gardener_in_south_central_la -147391

Ron Finley plants vegetable gardens in South Central LA -- in abandoned lots, traffic medians, along the curbs. Why? For fun, for defiance, for beauty and to offer some alternative to fast food in a community where "the drive-thrus are killing more people than the drive-bys."

In our last salon on redesigning fragile food systems, our speaker shared some of the principles of permaculture that can guide local collaborative efforts for growing food in urban areas.

Recently, we also came across Permaculture ethics, which are also central to the practice. They are derived from the research and study of communities that lived in a relative balance with the environment around them. So what are they?
- Earth Care
- People Care
- Fair Share

Earth Care is nurturing and improving our natural capital. You can easily tell how natural areas are doing by monitoring how many species are living there.

People Care is the simple act of taking care of self, family, and community by building our capacity of self-reliance and personal responsibility.

Fair Share is the idea that we only take what we need and we share what we don’t.

As the economic crisis continues to worsen in Lebanon, and with COVID forcibly slowing down the pace of our lives (for many of us), perhaps it is time to rethink our economic model and system.

In this mind-opening talk, economist Kate Raworth makes the compelling argument that the growth model of modern economies doesn't work and shares a different kind of economic model- the doughnut model- that is both regenerative and distributive and can create a sustainable and universally beneficial economy.

Check out her TED talk to learn more! Afterward, we'd love to hear what you think in the comments below.

What would a sustainable, universally beneficial economy look like? "Like a doughnut," says Oxford economist Kate Raworth. In a stellar, eye-opening talk, she explains how we can move countries out of the hole -- where people are falling short on life's essentials -- and create regenerative, distrib...
