Foster & Wiley

Foster & Wiley Neil Foster grew up in Fort Ann, New York, where, as a child, he formed a close friendship with Cliff Wiley.
(14)

Although different in many ways, the boys shared a deep curiosity about the world around them, a passion for learning, and the desire to make a difference. As Foster and Wiley grew older, their respective views on life diverged: Foster held that ideas are the measure of reality, whereas Wiley believed that direct experience with others is the key to a deeper understanding. Foster remained in his h

ometown and became a distinguished professor of philosophy, while Wiley set out to travel the world, and eventually became an acclaimed photojournalist. The two men became so engrossed in their own separate lives and livelihoods that they eventually lost touch. Years later, the celebrated photographer returned on a visit to the small town, and attended a lecture given by the now-famous professor. Foster stared in disbelief, watching his old friend unexpectedly enter the room, make his way to the front row, and sit down as the lecture began. Afterwards, the two stayed behind, shared stories of their youth, and realized, despite the divergence of their lives, how much they had been shaped and influenced by those past experiences. They ended the evening promising to create new stories together, and their renewed friendship endured until the end of their days. As a neighborhood eatery and drinkery, Foster and Wiley values relationships. Whether day or night, we offer a casual environment for people to dine, wine, and create new connections and experiences together.
