Julien Alfred, born on June 10, 2001, in the southern Castries community of Ciceron, has quickly become one of the most celebrated athletes in the world. At just 23 years old, she made history for her native Saint Lucia by winning the gold medal in the women’s 100 metres at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Her blazing time of 10.72 seconds not only set a new national record but also delivered Saint Lucia its first-ever Olympic medal. This victory was monumental, not only for Alfred but for an entire nation that had been waiting for such a defining moment. She followed this extraordinary feat with a silver medal in the 200 metres, finishing with a time of 22.08 seconds, solidifying her place among the world's elite sprinters.

Julien Alfred’s journey to becoming an Olympic champion is rooted in perseverance and determination. Born and raised in Ciceron, Saint Lucia, her early life was shaped by both triumph and hardship. She lost her father at the age of 12, a devastating event that would leave a lasting impact on her. Despite this, Alfred channeled her energy into athletics. She attended Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School in Saint Lucia and later moved to Jamaica, where she studied at St. Catherine High School from 2015 to 2018. Her early success in athletics came quickly, and in 2015, she became the Central American and Caribbean U15 champion. She was also named Saint Lucia’s Junior Sportswoman of the Year in both 2015 and 2017.
Her talent was evident from a young age, and she continued to excel as a junior athlete. In 2017, she won the gold medal in the 100 metres at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Nassau, Bahamas, and in 2018, she earned a silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Julien’s rise to international stardom continued during her time at the University of Texas in the United States, where she pursued a degree in Youth & Community Studies. Combining her academic pursuits with her athletic career, she became a powerhouse on the collegiate track and field circuit. In 2022, Alfred had an undefeated season in the 100 metres, winning the NCAA Division I championship and setting multiple records. Her time of 10.81 seconds in the Big 12 Conference preliminaries made her the fastest woman from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and a name to watch on the global stage.
Her dominance didn’t stop there. In 2023, she became the first woman in NCAA history to run under seven seconds in the 60 metres, setting a collegiate record of 6.97 seconds at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. She followed this with a stunning double victory at the NCAA Indoor Championships, where she clocked 6.94 seconds in the 60 metres and 22.01 seconds in the 200 metres. These performances placed her second on both world all-time lists for the respective events.
2024 proved to be the pinnacle of Julien Alfred’s career thus far. At the Summer Olympics in Paris, Alfred stunned the world by winning gold in the 100 metres with a blistering 10.72 seconds, setting a new national record and bringing Saint Lucia its first-ever Olympic medal. Her victory was not just a personal triumph but a moment of immense pride for her country. She also clinched a silver medal in the 200 metres, finishing behind Gabrielle Thomas, with a new national record time of 21.86 seconds set earlier in the year.
Alfred’s success in 2024 didn’t end with the Olympics. She also won gold in the 60 metres at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, clocking 6.98 seconds and marking Saint Lucia’s first medal at the Indoor Championships.
