The ancient city of Anuradhapura was founded in the 4th century and became the capital of Sri Lanka two centuries later, growing to become an extensive complex of monasteries, buildings and bathing pools.the ruins of this great city are still remarkably well preserved including the towering Dagobas, one of which pictured here, that at the time structures in the world, second only to the Egyptian Pyramids.

Baththalngunduwa is the Only sand island in srilanka. Around 38 kilometers or 20 nautical miles from the town of Kalpitiya off the Dutch Bay lies the island of Baththalangunduwa. Sri Lanka’s wonderful Asian Elephants were nearly hunted to extinction at the turn of the century,thankfully numbers are recovering due to protected national ark reserves and concerted conservation efforts.Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks are the location of the ‘elephant gathering ‘ where during the dry season of June to September,huge herds of over 500 individuals gather in the largest congregation of this type anywhere in the world.

Dondra lighthouse marks the southernmost point of Sri Lanka. Surprisingly, between here in the tropics and the icy cold of Antarctica lies nothing but ocean.
Whales and dolphins can often be spotted from Dondra Head as the continental shelf passes close to the island where these marine mammals follow deep-water migratory paths.
