May the Noble Triple Gem, the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha bless you all.
Dear dhamma devotees and dhamma friends,

Wish you all happy and peaceful Vesak Day....!

As a Buddhists today is one of the greatest and significant day because many Buddhists who live in all over the world celebrate the full moon day of vesak in order to respect three important occasions of life of the Buddha. They are the birth, the enlightenment and the passing away which took place on vesak day. In fact, Buddhism is the message for awakening from ignorance and leading to wisdom. Before the appearance of the Buddha, people were living in the dark and they did not know how to overcome their suffering. However, after Buddha’s enlightenment, people had a hope and a new philosophy that guided them to cultivate their mind for the realisation of ultimate truth. When the Buddha was born, it is said that many suffering beings were able to overcome from their sorrowful lives. In particular, when we look in to the history of Buddhism, we can find that once the bodhisattva was born, he had a special ability and he walked on seven lotuses and by standing on the last lotus, he uttered a beautiful stanza as follows;

‘’AGGO HAMASMI LOKASSA
I am the chief in the world
JETTO HAMASMI LOKASSA
There is no one equal to me
SETTO HAMASMI LOKASSA
I am supreme
AYAMANTIMA JATI NATTIDANI PUNABBAWO
This is my last birth no rebirth for me.’’

From this excellent Dharmic poem, we can understand that as a bodhisattva, he invited all of us to be like him. This means that as Buddhists, we have to work for Nirvana to eradicate the cause of rebirth. We need to discipline our mind, body and speech.
The second commemoration is enlightenment of the Buddha which is the most important one. According to the Buddhist teaching, the bodhisattva had to fight with all the defilements. Even the mara used his all the powers to disturb the Buddha’s cultivation for the enlightenment. However, the Buddha did not give up. So, he was able to eradicate three poisons; greed, anger and delusion. This incident teaches us that although it is not easy to cultivate the Dhamma, we should not give up and we should cultivate Dharmic thoughts every moment of our lives in the same way the Buddha did. Also, we must keep our self-effort, right understanding, confidence and insight in order to fight with all the negative thoughts such as lust, ill-will, hatred, craving and ignorance. We should always imagine and take the Buddha as an example and motivation for our own cultivation.
By preaching the Dhamma for 45 years, the Buddha showed to the world that no matter how much money, how much power, how many relatives and friends, how many material things that we have, one day, we have to leave everything behind even our own body. That is the third important event of the Buddha that occurred on vesak full moon day and on his last moment of life, he addressed his disciples and preached that

‘’HANDADANI BHIKKHAWE - AMANTAYAMI WO WAYADHAMMA SANKARA - APPAMADENA SAMPADETHA’’

This means that all phenomena are subject to change. Therefore, without being late, each and everyone should cultivate the Dhamma for the attainment of final liberation of Enlightenment,, Nibbana. If we can live according to this last advice of the Buddha, that is the true vesak celebration. So, this is high time for all of us to understand that our life is too short to have negative thoughts such as hatred, ill-will and delusion which cause us to suffer life after life. So, we should examine ourself whether we need happiness or suffering and whether we need to be born in good realms or bad realms. There is no one who can take our suffering and even the Buddha can't do it. Also, no way to escape from sicknesses, getting older and death. All the suffering are in our life because of birth and the birth can be stopped by only attaining Enlightenment. To attain enlightenment, we should follow the Buddhist teachings and we must put them in to practice for realization of Nibbana. So,, in this auspicious day, let's make a vow and determination that from today onwards, I will never do any wrong action, think any negative thought and speak any bad word. I will Cultivate Dharmic thoughts, pure intention, loving kindness, compassion and wisdom for the well-being of myself as well as others and all sentient beings.

"The one who lives with the Dhamma is protected by the Dhamma.....!

🙏 NAVAM POYA 🙏

Navam Poya Day is Today – Appointment of two disciples of Buddha as Aggasavakes.🙏🙏🙏

Navam full moon has special significance for the Buddhists in Sri Lanka and in the world. The two very significant incidents that took place on the Navam Pura Pasalosvaka Poya Day were the first ever Buddhist congregation and the appointment of two chief disciples of Gautama Buddha as Aggasavakes namely Sariputta and Moggallana. In the eve of the first Navam Full Moon Poya day after the Enlightenment of Gauthama Buddha, there were more than One thousand two hundred and fifty disciples in the Order of Maha Sangha.🙏🙏🙏

The Enlightened One envisaged the need for the use of the principles of management for maintaining the moral conduct and discipline of His followers. Although there had been no problems until then the far- sighted Enlightened One would have anticipated incidents of breach of conduct and morality when the community of Sangha grew in number and variety.🙏🙏🙏

The Buddha had observed the inconvenience caused to His prospective disciples who had to come all the way to Veluvanaramaya where the Enlightened One was dwelling whenever they wanted His advice and when they wanted to get their points clarified. During the early days after the Enlightenment the aspirants of asceticism or monasticism were ordained by Buddha Himself. At the first congregation Gauthama Buddha introduced the principles of delegation of powers and functions and requested the members of the Maha Sangha to ordain the aspirants of asceticism without requiring them to come all the way to see Buddha. This enabled them to enter the priesthood when and where they wished and come to Buddha when they needed clarifications and further advice. As mentioned earlier, the appointment of Sariputta and Moggallana as the two main disciples – “Aggrasavaka” took place on this significant day of Navam Poya. Sariputta was appointed to the prestigious position of “Dharmasenadipathi” and Moggallana as “Dharmapurohita” respectively. Some monks were discussing as to why some of the senior monks were overlooked in making these key appointments.🙏🙏🙏

The Exalted one – Gautama Buddha with HIS divine eye saw what the disciples or Buddhist monks were contemplating and explained to them the appropriateness of those two appointments. In order to clear the doubts of the monks and to elucidate or to make clear, Buddha explained the fact that seniority was not the only criteria or qualification that had been taken in to consideration in these two key appointments.🙏🙏🙏

May the merits from this Dhamma-dāna be to the welfare and happiness of all beings..🙏🙏🙏

Unduvap Full Moon Poya Day 🙏

Unduvap Poya is the last Full Moon Poya day of the year and commemorates the arrival of Sangamitta Theri in Sri Lanka with a Bo sapling from the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in India during the month of Unduwap.

Sangamitta Theri was accompanied on this voyage of utmost importance by several members of the royal family who had entered the Sasanaya. This contingent landed in Dambakolapatuna port in Jaffna on an Unduvap Poya day during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa. Sangamitta Theri was the daughter of Emperor Asoka and the sister of Arahant Mahinda who brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka on Poson Poya day. After landing here and delivering this precious gift, she was responsible for establishing the Bhikkhuni Sasana during the month of Unduvap.

The sacred Bo sapling was brought to Sri Lanka in a golden bowl, and thereafter planted in the Mahameuna Garden in Anuradhapura. Bo saplings that emerged from this tree were taken to other parts of the island to spread the Buddhist philosophy and culture. It is said that this visit by Sangamitta Theri was beneficial to Sri Lanka in many ways other than its main purpose of bringing the Bo sapling. The retinue that accompanied her included people skilled in diverse crafts and disciplines such as wood work, agriculture, indigenous medicine, etc. and their expertise was shared with the locals. Since then these skills have been handed down through generations and utilized for the development of this country.

In honor of this event back in history, devotees flock to Anuradhapura in their thousands on Unduvap Poya day to pay homage to the sacred Bo tree and observe the five precepts in order to lead exemplary lives.

It is also recorded that during the Lord Buddha’s lifetime, He visited Sri Lanka, and on one of these visits placed His footprint on the summit of the mountain known as Adam’s Peak or Sri Pada. This was on the invitation of lord Sumana Saman. From then on the Sri Pada pilgrimage became an integral part of every Buddhist’s spiritual journey, to be embarked on at least once in a lifetime.

Today is Esala Full Moon Poya Day ! 🙏

The Importance of Esala Poya, 🙏

It was on the Esala Full Moon Poya Day the Buddha arrived at the deer park of Isipathana to preach Dhamma to Ven. Kondangna, Vappa, Bhaddiya, Mahanama and Assaji, the five ascetics.

The Buddha delivered His first discourse Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta to them. At the end, the eldest Kondangna Thera attained the first stage of sainthood.

Esala Full Moon Poya is very important in the Buddhist calendar. According to Buddhist history, many significant events had taken place on the Esala Full Moon Poya Day. Among them, the conception of Prince Siddartha in Queen Mahamaya’s womb occurred on the Esala Full Moon Poya Day.

Buddhist literature reveals that a thousand years ago Queen Mahamaya, in one of her previous lives had the same unusual dream on an Esala Full Moon Poya Day.

It was on this day that King Suddhodana, Prince Siddartha’s father was conveyed the happy news by Queen Mahamaya, the mother of Prince Siddartha.

The Queen had woken up early in the morning and informed the King about this. The King had a deep thought of the dream and knew that a great person was conceived in Queen Mahamaya’s womb.

According to the dream, four guardian deities of the world carried the Queen in a beautiful couch to the snow clad foothills of the Himalayan Mountain Range, where a white baby elephant that had a white lotus flower in its trunk walked thrice round the couch of the sleeping Queen Mahamaya. Thereafter, the baby elephant entered into her womb from the right side of the abdomen. The dream came to an end and the Queen was suddenly awakened.

The next morning Queen Mahamaya revealed everything about the previous night’s dream to King Suddhodana.

The King realised that the dream indicated a good news, the conception of a very great person to the world. It was the Esala Full Moon Poya Day, Queen Mahamaya was conceived Bodisattva.

The King and the Queen did not have a child for 20 years. Therefore, the happy news was a joyful event not only for the King and the Queen, but the maids and other workers employed in the King’s palace. The Prince was born on the Vesak Full Moon Poya Day.

History reveals that the month of Vesak was introduced to the Buddhist calendar during the Vishaka Era. Prince Siddartha was also born in a month belonged to the Vishaka Era. It was the fifth month according to the Roman calendar.

The three significant incidents in the life of the Buddha, the Birth, enlightenment and the passing away took place on the same Full Moon Poya Day during the Vishaka era. Therefore, Buddhists call it as the Vesak Full Moon Poya Day.

Prince Siddartha’s mother, Queen Mahamaya passed away after seven days of his birth. The Prince was thereafter looked after by his step-mother Queen Maha Prajapathi Gothami, the sister of Queen Mahamaya. After the death, Queen Mahamaya was born in the Thavthisa heaven.

The Prince lived a luxurious life. He realised that the life was impermanent and full of suffering. Therefore, he was always determined to find a path or a way to solve the problems of universal sufferings. At the age of 29, the prince decided to leave the palace, leaving all comforts to find the way out of universal suffering. The great Renunciation also took place on an Esala Full Moon Poya Day, 2,600 years ago.

It was on the Esala Poy Day, seven weeks after the attainment of Buddhahood, the Buddha delivered His first discourse, the Dhammachakkapavattna Sutta (the wheel of truth) to the five Ascetics, Kondanna, Vappa, Bhaddiya, Mahanama and Assaji at Isipathanaya in Benares (Baranasi).

The sermon consisted of the central teachings of the Buddha – the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. At the end of the Sutta the eldest Kondangna Thera attained sotapatti, the first stage of sainthood.

The Buddha says, “What, O Bhikkus, is that middle path the Thathagatha has discovered which promotes sight, knowledge, peace, higher wisdom, Enlightenment and Nibbana? It is this Noble Eightfold Path”.

Hearing the discourse, the other four ascetics later attained the status of Arahat. The five ascetics were the first disciples of the Buddha. He spent three months with these pancha vagga bhikkhus in Isipatanaramaya.

The book The Discovery of India, written by former Indian Prime Minister Sri Jawaharlal Nehru mentions how he sees the Buddha preaching his first sermon” at Saranath near Baranasi.

He said, “Some of his recorded words would come like a distant echo through two thousand five hundred years ago.”

The observance of Vas by the Maha Sangha during the rainy season was introduced by the Buddha when he was with the five bhikkhus. The commencement of the rainy season began from the month of Esala.

Vas signifies the cessation from going about begging alms (Pindapatha) during the rainy season for the bhikkhus residing in a definite place, either in a sanctuary of their respective vihares or in a particular abode. Buddhist laity provided the bhikkhus with food, robes and other necessities during the rainy season.

In return for this gesture, the bhikkus were told by the Buddha to engage in the practice of ‘Vidharshana Bhavana’ meditation and make the laity partake of the merit.

Furthermore, Esala also signifies a number of important events in the life of the Buddha.

It was on Esala Full Moon Poya Day, the Buddha visited Thusitha Heaven by using his miraculous power to preach the Abhidhamma to his mother the Matru Divyaraja and other gods.

The convocation of the first Buddhist Council (First Dharma Sangayana) was held on the Esala Poya Day under the patronage of King Ajasaththa, three months after the Parinibbana of the Buddha at the Satipattana cave on the vehera rock near Rajagaha. It was headed by the Ven Maha Kassapa with the participation of 500 Arahats.

It was on the same Esala Full Moon Poya Day, that Prince Rahula, the only child of Prince Sdiddartha and Princess Yasodara was born. The day Prince Siddartha saw the whole world including His wife and child suffering not knowing the way out of it. The Prince left home in prime of his youth. Buddhists still believe that his Great Renunciation was the boldest step that a man has ever taken.

An additional factor that enhances the value of this poya to Sri Lanka is the first local ordination of a Sri Lankan, when Prince Arittha, the nephew of the king, entered the Order at Anuradhapura, under Arahant Mahinda, following the introduction of Buddhism. On this day there also took place the laying of the foundation for the celebrated dagoba, the Mahastupa or the Ruwanvelisaya and also its enshrinement of relics by King Dutugemunu. It is owing to the combination of all these events that the Sinhala Buddhists fittingly observe this day ceremonially by holding Esala festivals throughout the island, giving pride of place to the internationally famous Kandy Esala Perahera.

Esala poya assumes prominence for yet another ritual of the Sri Lankan Buddhists. This is the annual rains retreat of the monks, 'Vas', which commences on the day following the Esala full moon. On the next poya day, Nikini (August), those monks who failed to commence the normal Vas on the day following Esala Poya, are allowed to enter the 'late Vas'. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
