Although not known for its ancient historical significance, the Japanese built Tsunami Honganji Viharaya is a sombre reminder of the tsunami that devastated the coastal belt of the island in 2004. Built in the year 2006, the place of worship is a peaceful one and reflects a more East Asian design, as opposed to the ancient local temples. The highlight of the temple is the tall statue of the Lord Buddha that dominates the skyline of the area. Standing at 30 metres, it is one of the largest statues on the island.

The Nine Arch Bridge

One of the most attractive places in Ella. The Nine Arches Bridge also called the Bridge in the Sky. the Nine Arch Bridge stands proudly, a testament to the engineering and architectural brilliance of the early 20th century. Stone, brick and cement were used to build the bridge. The bridge is 300 feet length, 25 feet wide and 80 feet high. The construction of the bridge is generally attributed to a local Ceylonese builder, P. K. Appuhami, in consultation with British engineers. The chief designer and project manager of the 'upcountry railway line of Ceylon' project was D. J. Wimalasurendra, a distinguished Ceylonese engineer and inventor. The designer of the viaduct was Harold Cuthbert Marwood of Railway Construction Department of Ceylon Government Railway. The 1923 report titled "Construction of a Concrete Railway Viaduct in Ceylon" published by the Engineering Association of Ceylon has details of all the records including the plans and drawings. Construction was ended in 1921. It is located in Demodara, between Ella and Demodara railway stations.
