This here is a Sandakada Pahana, or "moonstone".

It's a unique and significant architectural feature found in ancient Sri Lankan architecture that tracks its origins all the way to the late ages of the Anuradhapura kingdom.

Initially, these intricately carved semicircular stone slabs were placed at the entrances of Buddhist temples.

According to historians, the moonstone depicts the cycle of Samsara - which is the cycle of rebirth.

The Sandakada Pahana evolved through the Polonnaruwa, Gampola, and Kandyan periods. However, the Anuradhapura era sandakada pahanas are considered to be the most detailed and complex.

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year, also known as Aluth Avurudda in Sinhala and Puthandu in Tamil, is a significant cultural festival celebrated in Sri Lanka.

It's celebrated in April, commonly on the 13th or 14th of April, marking the traditional new year for both Sinhalese and Tamil communities.

The dawn of the new year is marked on the exact moment the sun passes directly over Sri Lanka each year. It's tied to the solar calendar, specifically when the sun moves from the House of Pisces to the House of Aries.

It's also a harvest festival, symbolizing renewal and prosperity.

This festival and celebration is a time for families to reunite and participate in traditional rituals - including traditional food, as shown here, and customary games.

It's a celebration that transcends religious boundaries, fostering unity.

So, as we do here in Sri Lanka, we wish you all a very happy and prosperous Sinhala-Tamil New Year!

The Polonnaruwa Vatadage is a remarkable ancient structure located within the ancient city of Polonnaruwa.

Purpose and Significance:

- It's a circular relic house, or "vatadage," built to protect a small stupa.
- There are differing theories about what relic it housed: Some believe it was the Tooth Relic of the Buddha, while others suggest it held the Buddha's alms bowl.

There's debate about its builder:

- Some historians attribute it to King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century.
- Others suggest it was built by King Nissanka Malla.

Architectural Features:

- It features a circular design with two stone platforms.
- Elaborate stone carvings adorn the structure, showcasing the artistry of the period.

Decline and Rediscovery:

- Polonnaruwa was abandoned in 1215, and the Vatadage fell into disrepair.
- Excavation and restoration work began in 1903, revealing the structure's former glory.

In essence, the Polonnaruwa Vatadage is a testament to the advanced architecture and religious devotion of ancient Sri Lanka, and it remains a significant historical and cultural site.

The famous Lion’s Gate of Sigiriya Rock Fortress!

- The gate served as the primary entrance to the royal palace that sat atop the Sigiriya rock.

- The name "Sigiriya" itself, derived from "Sīhāgiri," meaning "Lion Rock," comes from this impressive structure.

- Originally, the gate was a massive sculpture of a lion, through which the final ascent to the palace was made.

- Today, only the enormous lion's paws remain, providing a powerful testament to the original scale and grandeur of the structure.
