It's been an incredible two weeks and a privilege being on a photo / videography assignment for Greenpeace on the state of the art Rainbow Warrior vessel as we ventured with into northern part the 90 East Ridge in the Indian Ocean to cover a cetacean research expedition led by Asha de Vos and her team from Oceanswell.

From spectacular sunsets, sailing through tropical thunderstorms, incredible wildlife encounters and working with the most committed crew and team of scientists one can come across, it was a surreal once in a lifetime experience.

It is also heartening to see Greenpeace South Asia opening up an office in Colombo and I hope they will be able to make a positive impact in the region.

Every now again, you strike gold and are privileged to see incredibly special moments in the wild. This is the story of one such encounter.

Around 10:00am, a female leopard known as KLF11 (Khema), was seen atop the Itigala rocky outcrop in Kumana National Park. We were soon alerted that there were really young leopard cubs peeping from the bottom of the rock at the cave entrance. After quite a long wait, we observed a cub within the rocky outcrop inside the cave, and soon two others came into view. After a short while, these three cute furballs began to get very active, playing, chasing each other and biting each other continuously for the next 45 mins so or. After a brief rest, when they went back into the cave, they re-appeared and continued to play. The mother meanwhile, got off the rock, crossed the road and went into the jungle and then re-appeared a couple of times back to the same spot.

Close to 4:00pm, the mother returned and the cubs could be seen calling out to her, and then all three darted across to the adjacent rock, covered by shrubby vegetation. We could just about make out the mother lying on the rock, while the three cubs were suckling for milk.

Afterwards, the cubs re-emerged on to the main rock but in to the open, where they were exploring their surroundings, playing with branches and twigs without a care in the world. Finally, they moved off and despite the wait until close to dusk, they did not re-emerge, allowing us to end the day on a real high.

The cubs are only around 2 months in age, just about old enough to start playing and exploring the den site, yet, still completely reliant on its mother to survive. It was the first sighting of these new cubs by the safari jeep drivers and the Kumana National Park trackers.

12th August 2022: World Elephant Day
The Asian Elephant is a cultural symbol and a flagship species in Sri Lanka that is central to conserving the existing wilderness areas across the country. It is one of the top draws in attracting tourists to the island, and Sri Lanka remains the best place in the world to see elephants in the wild. The Gathering of Elephants in Kaudulla & Minneriya is ranked amongst the world’s top wildlife spectacles.
Sadly, unplanned development has put us directly in cross-roads with elephants, as their jungle homes are steadily being encroached upon and converted to farmland and for human settlements. The Human-Elephant conflict is one of the biggest socio-economic issues facing Sri Lanka today. Over 300 elephants and 50 people a year die annually from HEC and the figures are escalating at present.

Please support us in helping conserve the elephant in Sri Lanka. Get in touch if you are interested to help with programs mitigating HEC.

As we commemorate 'World Ocean Day' today here in Sri Lanka, we cannot ignore the environmental damage from the leakage of chemicals and toxins by the X-press Pearl vessel. As an island, we have an economy that depends heavily on tourism and fishing, for which we need a healthy ocean. Sri Lanka is an island that is incredibly blessed by an abundance of marine biodiversity including 28 species of marine mammals, 5 out of 7 species of sea turtles, over 208 species of hard coral. 756 species of marine molluscs and over 1300 species of marine fish. Let's hope the authorities will do a thorough investigation so toxic spills like this can be avoided at all costs and pray that the damage is not so severe and that our marine eco-systems recover quickly.

Exploring Horton Plains

Horton Plains is Sri Lanka’s highest elevated national park lying 7,000 feet above sea level consisting of cloud forests and open grassland. One of the main highlights is the scenic nature walk to World's End viewpoint and Baker's Falls. There are also two other treks to Kirigalpotha and Thotupolakanda, the second and third highest mountains in Sri Lanka for more advanced hikers.

Sambar, Sri Lanka’s largest species of deer are encountered in the plains close to the entrance while the shaggy coated Bear Monkey (Highland race of the Purple-faced Leaf Monkey) is occasionally seen within the forested areas. The island's apex predator, the Leopard rules these highland plateaus.

A variety of endemic wildlife including Rhino-horned and Pygmy Lizards, highland bird species including the Sri Lanka White-eye, Dull-blue Flycatcher and Yellow-eared Bulbul. Horton Plains is one of the few known locations where elusive highland endemics such as the ‘Arrenga’ or Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush and Sri Lanka Bush Warbler can be observed.

It's Palu season. The months of May - June are typically a time of year when the Sloth Bears go on a feeding frenzy and gauge themselves on ripening Palu (Ceylon Ironwood, Mesua ferrea) and Weera (Drypetes sepiaria) berries. Bears often get intoxicated by feeding on the fermented fruits and can be wobbling along the road while walking or even passed out under a tree or by the side of the road.

hope to resume guided photo safaris for Sri Lankans to explore the wilds of Sri Lanka once travel restrictions ease up. As we stay at home amidst the prevailing Covid-19 crisis, we would like to share some special moments from the safaris run to Yala last year, with the help of the team from . Some of the memorable encounters include a magical sighting of Yala's favourite leopard couple - Lucas & Aster, and a Mugger Crocodile feeding frenzy at Koma Wewa.

Africa! It is a land of rolling plains teeming with an abundance of wildlife found nowhere else on earth, where noble warriors proudly continue ancient traditions to carry on the legacy of their ancestors. The splendour of an African sunrise or sunset on the horizon over wide expanses of open savannah that glitters in golden light is simply breathtaking. Africa is a land where time stands still, it is a place where the roar of the Lion echoes on for miles through the wilderness sending shivers down the spine any animal or human in the surrounding vicinity. It is a magical destination that stirs your soul, making you feel both vulnerable and invincible at the same time.

We hope to return to Kenya in 2022 to see Africa's famed Big Five and the Great Migration.

The Spotted Deer that roam the streets of Trincomalee.

It is believed that during the periods of British rule, that a few Spotted Deer were brought into Fort Fredrick to be kept as pets for the military that were stationed here. Over the decades that followed, the deer have multiplied and now roam freely around Fort Fredrick and in p***c spaces such as parks and the beaches in between the Trincomalee town and the Fort. The Deer have over the years gor very habituated to the presence of people, however visitors are urged against feeding them as it may cause the animals to fall ill.

Meet Nandamithra

Named after the best known and strongest of legendary King Dutugemunu's ten giant warriors, Nandamithra is a tusker in the prime of his life that resides in and around Yala National Park Block I and the Sithulpahuwa Temple. He is amongst a dozen of wild tuskers found in Yala and is known especially when in musth to be short-tempered and to charge at vehicles. Only 7% of bull elephants in Sri Lanka have tusks and each wild tusker that lives is extremely precious. The life of a wild elephant in Sri Lanka is extremely challenging as they have to constantly avoid conflict with man across human settlements that continue to expand into the wilderness. Let's hope that this icon of Yala continues to define the odds in the years ahead.
