The Tale of the Mugger I BBC Planet Earth 3
The exclusive premiere of BBC #PlanetEarth3's episode 'Freshwater' featuring our very own Mugger crocodiles at Yala National Park, was hosted at Scope Cinemas in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The untamed beauty of the Sri Lankan wilderness was captured by the BBC team with our Cinnamon Nature Trails team facilitating this endeavour. The documentary is also unveiling a musical odyssey by composer Hans Zimmer featuring the talents of RAYE and Bastille, and is voiced by Sir David Attenborough himself.
The event was graced by Chitral Jayatilake, Vice President of Cinnamon Nature Trails and Mikael Svensson, CEO, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts alongside our colleagues and wildlife enthusiasts.
Here is what guests at the premiere had to say:

Say hello to our naturalist, Sampath Gunasinghe!
Say hello to our naturalist, Sampath Gunasinghe!
He discovered his love and fondness for all things great and small when he was a young schoolboy in the coastal town of Galle. He pursued his love for nature and wildlife by joining the Wildlife Conservation Society of Galle and then went on to join Cinnamon Nature Trails as a Naturalist.
He is no stranger to promoting the natural beauty Sri Lanka has to offer and has handled ground operations for 12 wildlife documentaries with reputed media outlets such as BBC Natural History, Animal Planet, Ammonite UK, and National Television of Japan (NHK).
What’s so special and unique about the Mangroves, you ask? Sampath says it’s the unique vegetation, root system, species adaptation and limited diversity it has to offer the delicate Sri Lankan eco-system. He encourages people to experience the “mangrove cave” through which one can pass through in a boat to see the abundant, green mangroves all around.
If you’re lucky you can perhaps spot different types of rare birds such as the bright yellow Oriole, the rare Green Pigeon, and striking blue Kingfisher when enjoying the picturesque boat ride on the calm, cool Madu Ganga. In addition to being a marginal ecosystem, the mangrove is unique, as an ecosystem, it has interactions with other ecosystems, both adjoining and remote in species - It’s all about teamwork and communication, even in nature!
As a naturalist, Sampath is in awe that he can enjoy his professional life with remarkable creatures ranging from tiny insects to the largest terrestrial (the elephant) and largest marine mammal ever lived on this planet (Blue Whale).
Next time you’re taking a scenic boat ride when you visit Cinnamon Bentota Beach, don’t forget to keep an eye out for the stealthy water monitor or “Kabaragoya”

World Elephant Day!
As we celebrate World Elephant Day today, it is critical to discuss the importance of protecting these charismatic beasts and the possible conservation efforts to ensure the future generations are as lucky as us to witness their grand presence in the wild!
‘Cinnamon Elephant Project’ - a collaborative effort between Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts and the Centre for Conservation and Research is a groundbreaking initiative to develop best practices in elephant tourism.
This initiative has sponsored satellite radio collars, which were successfully placed on elephants in the wild. This data is being collated by Sri Lanka’s best known Elephant scientist Dr. Pruthu Fernando enabling the availability of data for Government to mitigate the Elephant-Human conflict in the North-Central province of Sri Lanka.
In addition, the project also aims at identifying elephants based on their morphological characteristics and their life stories, followed by our naturalists at Cinnamon Nature Trails. This information is shared with visitors on safari and in-house guests at Cinnamon Lodge Habarana, through a newly constructed elephant research station. This station empowers visitors with the right data to have an in-depth understanding and enriched safari experience!
As a responsible corporate citizen, we believe it is our duty to do our part in conserving our biodiversity. Hold hands with us to spread awareness this World Elephant Day!
In Search of Lucas!
"In celebration of World Environment Day, we bring you part 2 of our video series on Yala National Park's famed Lucas the Leopard, thriving in his ecosystem.
Born in 2017, Lucas and his brother Lance were looked after well by their mother, an exceptional leopardess who lives in the north - western block of Yala.
The nature of a male leopard is to stay with their mother till they reach 18 months, after which they begin their often lonely journey of becoming a dominant male in the area they choose.
However, Lucas is well known for having left his mother and younger brother even earlier to claim his own territory. Now, he can be seen regularly around the south-eastern corner of Block 1.
Unafraid of attention and bold as ever, he does not hesitate to capture prey larger than his body size.
