Sri Lanka’s oldest company fortifies its Board in readiness for a phase of accelerated growth under new stewardship.
Sarva Ameresekere has been appointed the Group Chairman of George Steuart & Co. Ltd.(GS&Co), Sri Lanka’s oldest company established in 1835. The appointment comes as Dilith Jayaweera resigned from the Group Chairmanship and all directorates he held within the Group in January, as Jayaweera’s entrepreneurial journey shifts focus to creating a national level political impact.

Dilith Jayaweera together with his partners Varuni Amunugama Fernando and Sarva Ameresekere acquired GS&Co in 2011. Buoyed by the post-war sentiment of the time, the investment saw GS&Co enter a sustained trajectory of expansion and growth. Today, GS&Co stands as a testament to the power of belief and entrepreneurship in staying competitive and relevant, after 189 years in business. The Group’s diversified sectors include tea exports, healthcare, travel, leisure, financial services, FMCG and industrial solutions.

The Board of GS&Co has been strengthened with the appointment of three independent directors, namely Devaka Cooray, Dimantha Seneviratne and Dr Dinesh Palipana, who joined the company in the recent past. Devaka Cooray is a finance and assurance expert with a distinguished career at Ernst & Young, while veteran Banker Dimantha Seneviratne recently retired as CEO of NDB Bank. Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM is a doctor, lawyer, researcher, senior lecturer in medicine and an equality advocate based in Australia. The Board’s composition now represents a wide variety of stakeholder interests and expertise, with visionaries and shareholders Varuni Amunugama Fernando and Sarva Ameresekere, stalwarts of GS&Co and industry leaders Dai Pathmanathan and Eran Ranasinghe, while Manoj Pilimatalawwe brings information technology to the fore at Board-level.

The new Group Chairman, Sarva Ameresekere was first appointed to the Board of GS&Co in 2020 and was then made Group Executive Director thereafter. He serves on many Boards within the Group including all its listed entities and had been the Chief Executive Officer of the Triad Group since 2008. Qualified in both business and engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, Sarva has extensive local and foreign experience. Under his stewardship, Sri Lanka’s oldest company will head to its future with global ambitions and a bold outlook.

Citrus Leisure PLC has announced the appointment of Suresh de Mel as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Suresh De Mel will serve as Chairman of the Citrus Leisure Group of Companies which includes Waskaduwa Beach Resorts PLC and Hikkaduwa Beach Resorts PLC. The appointment comes following the sudden demise of the Group’s much loved Chairman Mr Prema Cooray.

Citrus also announced the appointment of Mr Lalith Withana as an Independent Non-Executive Director to the boards of the Group companies. Mr. Suresh De Mel, who has been an independent non-executive director of Citrus Leisure PLC since 2011, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. He has an extensive background in entrepreneurship, investment, exporting, and tourism services.

Mr. Cooray was our guiding light at Citrus Leisure PLC, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience in the travel and tourism industry of Sri Lanka and the world.
A visionary with outstanding leadership qualities, Mr. Cooray successfully transformed many hotel and tourism projects, both locally and internationally, into profitable endeavors. He was a driving force behind the development of sustainable tourism practices. His exceptional contribution to Sri Lanka’s tourism industry was recognized in 2011 by the Ministry of Tourism, which honoured with the "Legend of Tourism" award.
The loss of this remarkable leader and visionary is deeply felt by all of us at Citrus Leisure PLC; we shall always hold dear the memories of his kindness and wit, and the lessons he imparted. Dharini Fernando joins George Steuart Insurance Brokers Board
George Steuart Insurance Brokers Ltd. (GSIB) yesterday announced that Dharini Fernando has joined its Board of Directors with effect from 1 April 2024.
Possessing over 25 years of extensive experience in the insurance industry, Fernando began her career in reinsurance and subsequently moved on to other underwriting classes. Prior to joining GSIB, she functioned in several key senior positions at a leading insurer in Sri Lanka, where she successfully set up the company’s general and life divisions. These key positions included Chief Operating Officer, and the regulator-defined roles of Principal Officer and Specified Officer. Her previous professional experience also includes a diverse range of management positions across several leading multinational insurance companies including AIG, Allianz, and Zurich Financial Services.
GSIB Managing Director Joachim Caspersz welcomed the appointment of Fernando to the Board saying: “Dharini has been working with us for a few years and her formal appointment will strengthen the expertise we have whilst adding depth to our role as insurance brokers and insurance consultants. Her wide-ranging executive experience in the industry, especially in reinsurance, will allow us to broaden our service offering. Our clients, including insurers and overseas partners, will no doubt benefit from her addition to our team.”
Fernando said: “I am pleased to be joining the senior management of Sri Lanka’s leading corporate insurance broker. I look forward to contributing towards guiding the company towards even greater successes in the future.”
In the recent past, Cyber Insurance has been a significant focus area for Fernando. Accordingly, she is a Certified Cyber Insurance Specialist (CCIS) from the Cyber Insurance Academy in Tel Aviv, an accredited course by the Chartered Insurance Institute of London. She also holds the Certificate in Cybersecurity from ISC2, the world’s leading organisation for cybersecurity professionals.

We’ve been keeping quite the secret for the last week!!
An A-Team of thirteen stars from Citrus is on their way back to Colombo after an incredible Indian adventure in Gujarat. It was our absolute privilege to be selected as one of the caterers to what was perhaps the grandest pre-wedding celebration of our time! Ceylon Curry Club was at the Anant Ambani - Radhika Merchant celebration, serving a selection of favourites from its Sri Lankan fusion cuisine menu.
Originally slated to cater for one lunch service, Ceylon Curry Club was astounded to be asked to cater for a second consecutive day due to the overwhelmingly positive response to our cuisine and service.
Congratulations to the team led by Kumudu and Chef Pandu who worked tirelessly in India to fly our Sri Lanka’s flag high! 🇱🇰

The first gathering of ‘Api Champions’ for 2024 was held today with the participation of members from all our subsidiaries. Interesting and meaningful sessions were lined up in this workshop, reminding ourselves, the unique culture we share and how happiness can only come from one’s own actions.

‘Api Champions’ is the engagement committee that is established at George Steuart Group, to be the driving force, in bringing ‘Our Happiness Culture’ to life, with Fellowship, Compassion and Team Engagement. Having met all members today, coming from seven different sectors, it was a great occasion where we celebrated our achievements in 2023 whilst strengthening our bonds as one Happy Family!
