As we commemorate 'World Ocean Day' today here in Sri Lanka, we cannot ignore the environmental damage from the leakage of chemicals and toxins by the X-press Pearl vessel. As an island, we have an economy that depends heavily on tourism and fishing, for which we need a healthy ocean. Sri Lanka is an island that is incredibly blessed by an abundance of marine biodiversity including 28 species of marine mammals, 5 out of 7 species of sea turtles, over 208 species of hard coral. 756 species of marine molluscs and over 1300 species of marine fish. Let's hope the authorities will do a thorough investigation so toxic spills like this can be avoided at all costs and pray that the damage is not so severe and that our marine eco-systems recover quickly.

The Colombo City Walk.

The Colombo City Walk is a hosted experience takes you through a myriad of buildings around the Pettah and Fort area that date back from 17th – 19th centuries which were erected mainly during the periods of Dutch and British rule. With the dawn of the post conflict times, we see the tremendous effort being put into this area to refurbish and bring these buildings to their hay-day wondrous state. Explore the street bazars, the local fruit and vegetable market which is buzzing with activity through the day and enjoy a sweet Faluda and some sample some local delicacies as you walk through these busy streets.

Exploring Ritigala

Ritigala is an ancient retreat of Buddhist monks, where the ruins of a 1st century BC monastery lie hidden deep within the forest. Its height and the local weather patterns create a microclimate different from that of the surrounding plains of the dry lowlands, and Ritigala is home to a variety of rare species of plant and animal. Its biodiversity is now strictly protected and the area is today demarcated as a Strict Nature Reserve. When visiting Ritigala, you trek through the dry evergreen forest and pass through the remains of ancient stone bathing-pools, bridges and courtyards.

Christ Church Warleigh, Dickoya

The picturesque Christ Church Warleigh borders the tea estates around the Castlereagh reservoir and was built by the British in the 19th century. It is one of the oldest Anglican churches in the island and was built by William Scott, the manager of the Governor's Mansion in 1878. There is a copy preserved in the church of the original bible printed in the 1860's that was handed over to the church in 1879 by Rev. Charles Hill. The Church was built in typical old British church architecture with walls made from granite stones, and the 19th century stained windows that depict paintings of Jesus Christ that were brought down from England.
