There are myths that male elephants squeeze a female's ear to induce pregnancy. This article reveals the science behind mating between elephants, dispelling myths and rumours.

🐘 When do elephants reach s*xual maturity?

Sexual maturity refers to the age of first ovulation in females and s***m concentration in males.

Studies show that elephants reach s*xual maturity at an average age of 11 to 14 years. However, individual elephants sometimes break the norm, reaching maturity at eight years and some at 30 years.

In general, elephant maturity may depend on food resources and local climate, among other environmental factors. Unlike females, males, which usually stay with the herd, often move away from their natal herds as they reach maturity.

🐘 Elephant Heat: What exactly is it?

Heat in female elephants is described as a period when the female is receptive to mating and her hormones promote ovulation. According to reports, the average time between heats is about 16 weeks. Thus, elephants can breed only three times a year. These elephants can have their first heat cycle at the age of nine.

Female elephants do not show obvious signs of heat. If an elephant is in heat, her va**na relaxes slightly and she urinates. Occasionally, the female may sweep the v***a with her tail or raise her tail to attract males.
