Good morning from Sri Lanka

A Day with Rice Field Farmers

Step into the belle green rice paddies of sri lanka, where rice farmers worship each dawn with dedication, blessing the land that’s been at the center of local life for centuries. Join them for a day, walk through the fields, feel the rich soil underfoot, and see firsthand the craft of planting and harvesting rice.

It is not just a crop, but the staple of life in Sri Lanka, grown with love, tradition, and patriotism. In these fields, one can really experience the heritage of the island and the welcoming feelings of its people. A must-experience journey!

Sri Lanka is not just an island, it’s a symphony of languages, each with its own rhythm and script that paints a vivid picture of our diverse cultures.

Sri Lanka’s languages aren’t just means of communication, they are the threads that weave together our stories, histories, and identities. Every sign you see, every word you hear, tells a tale of resilience, migration, and unity.

When you visit Sri Lanka, listen closely—not just to the voices, but to the history they carry. Let the scripts and sounds of this island enchant you.

Good morning from Sri Lanka
Did you know?

The first breadfruit tree in Sri Lanka was planted by the Dutch back in the 17th century. Today, this starchy fruit is an essential ingredient in Sri Lankan cookery, found in delicious curries or roasted as a local treat.

One of the oldest breadfruit trees is still standing at Akersloot Bastion in Galle Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a living symbol of Sri Lanka's ritch history handed down from colonialism centuries ago! Even the locals have amusing tales of why the Dutch tried to plant breadfruit on the island and failed while this tree continues to grow!

On your next trip, be sure to try breadfruit and visit this centuries-old tree in Galle Fort!

Good morning from Sri Lanka!

Cashew

Sri Lanka's Nutty Tradition

Cashew trees are a familiar sight across Sri Lanka, and growing up, I saw cashew fruit everywhere. While the fruit is juicy, it’s not exactly a favorite in terms of flavor for many. But what it lacks in taste, it makes up for in tradition—especially during Christmas when it’s used to make homemade wine.

And of course, there’s the nut! Unlike most nuts, cashews grow outside a fleshy fruit called the cashew apple, making them quite unique. Producing them is no small feat either—each tree only gives 2-3 kilos of nuts a year. So, when you enjoy a handful, you’re tasting the hard labor of an entire tree!

Although cashews aren’t originally from Sri Lanka (thanks to the Portuguese for bringing them over 350 years ago), they’ve become a part of our landscape. The heart of cashew country is Kajugama, a must-visit stop when traveling from Colombo to Kandy. Here, women sell cashews from traditional coconut-leaf huts—a beautiful sight that’s been charming travelers for generations.

Next time you snack on cashews, think of the rich culture and history behind that little nut!

Good morning from Sri Lanka!

Rice

A Grain That Unites

In Sri Lanka, rice is more than just food—it's a cultural cornerstone! As an essential part of every meal, rice has shaped the island's culinary traditions for centuries. Sri Lanka's ancient farmers were experts in paddy cultivation and once played a significant role in the global rice trade.

Today, Sri Lankans enjoy rice in many delicious forms:

Rice & Curry – The everyday staple, paired with a variety of flavorful curries.

Kiribath – Coconut milk rice, served on special occasions and celebrations.

Pittu – A delightful steamed rice flour dish, enjoyed with coconut milk and curry.

From simple breakfasts to festive feasts, rice remains at the heart of Sri Lankan culture. By choosing local rice, you're not just enjoying excellent food—you're supporting Sri Lankan farmers and preserving a rich heritage.

Good morning from Sri Lanka

Vap Poya day-----වප් පොහෝදිනය

The festival marks Buddha's preaching of Abhidamma to the gods in Tavatimsa and the end of the Buddhist period of fasting.

Maya, the mother of Buddha, died a week after Buddha was born. In the celestial abode of Tavatimsa, she reincarnated as the god Santusita. To honor his mother, Buddha ascended to the Tavatimsa Heaven and preached from the Abhidamma texts to Santusita for three months.

Buddhist Lent begins on Esala Full Moon Poya (July) and lasts for three months. During this time, monks will stay inside their temples and rely on alms from devotees. The full moon in Vap marks Buddha's return to earth and signifies the end of Buddhist Lent.

Sri Lankan villages are symbolic of the earthy, traditional, rustic and relaxed way of life. Predominantly inhabited by farmers, where people live off the land and are in tune with nature and their local environment. In comparison to the cities, village life is slow paced, calm and peaceful, cuisine more authentic, organic, music, dance and folklore are modes of relaxation. www.eurolanka.de can help you discover the unexplored and untouched rural beauty of this smiling land and experience the tradition and lifestyle of villagers, indulge in local delicacies, witness local traditions and rituals and learn about the region’s folk art, crafts, legends, music and dance.

Good morning, Sri Lanka!Endemic Hal tree (හල්) Hal tree grows mainly in the wet zone, between Colombo, Kandy, and Matara, and its fruit—an oblong nut—is ground and added to rice flour. To eliminate a bitter taste, wash the fruit. In the villages, people traditionally place it in a gony bag (thatched sack) and steam it for up to a day. The ground, dried fruit that is added to rice flour can be used for a variety of foods, including pittu.Diabetes, ulcers, rheumatic pains, diarrhea, and many other illnesses are treated using the bark, leaves, stems, and other parts of the tree at Ayurveda Medicine of Sri Lanka.A penny spent is a penny saved with me in this country.
