Eastland Bungalow, built in 1924 was first occupied by British planters who introduced tea as a commercial plantation to Sri Lanka in 1867. The bungalow has had many residents and many owners since then, until it was acquired by Clement Isack in 2006, with the aim of converting it into a holiday home and eventually his retirement home. With retirement a few years away, the bungalow is now rented o

ut for short breaks to a carefully selected blend of contacts and friends from all over the world. This is not a commercial venture, but purely a destination to give the weary mind a break from the stress of everyday life. We have a chef, butler, gardener and a manager who will take care of all your needs and ensure you experience the best of Sri Lankan hospitality - the hill country style. Whether its for a weekend or a month, there is enough to explore starting from a visit to the tea factory, all the way to trekking in the mountains connecting Kandy to Nuwaraeliya. The hamlet of Hewaheta is a sleepy little town, and life has not changed much in the last 50 years, and offers the visitor a look at the cycle of life followed by the natives during the time when the country took on the British for Independence. On the 4th of February 1948, the sun rose over a newly independent Ceylon, casting golden light over emerald fields and misty peaks. A nation, once entwined in the threads of colonial rule, found itself standing proud—its voice unshackled, its spirit unbroken.

Sri Lanka’s independence was not just a political shift but the reclamation of an identity deeply rooted in the rhythms of its land—the dance of paddy fields in the breeze, the songs of temple bells at dawn and the resilience of its people.

Here at Eastland Bungalow, nestled in the heart of nature, we are reminded of that quiet strength. As the mist rolls over the mountains and the fields glisten with morning dew, we celebrate the beauty of a land that has endured, evolved and embraced its heritage with grace.

Today, we honor those who paved the way for freedom, the hands that till the soil, the voices that tell our stories, and the timeless traditions that make this island home.

🇱🇰 Happy Independence Day, Sri Lanka! May we continue to cherish and nurture this paradise we call our own.

Kiri Bath, meaning “milk rice,” is a treasured Sri Lankan dish that holds a special place in the country’s culture and cuisine.

More than just food, it symbolizes celebration, unity and tradition, often gracing the table during auspicious occasions, New Year festivities and family gatherings.

Made with just three simple ingredients—white rice, creamy coconut milk, and a pinch of salt—Kiri Bath is deeply rooted in Sri Lankan heritage. Traditionally prepared to mark milestones or the start of a new year, it represents prosperity and blessings.

It’s typically served with flavorful accompaniments like lunu miris, a spicy chili and onion sambal or jaggery for a sweet contrast, perfectly balancing richness and spice.

For many, the aroma of freshly made Kiri Bath evokes a sense of nostalgia, as it’s a dish passed down through generations, bringing families together.

At Eastland Bungalow, a plate of Kiri Bath after a morning hike is especially comforting. Its satisfying richness can leave you feeling both nourished and delightfully sleepy—perfect for slowing down and embracing the tranquil mountain vibes.

Kiri Mahathaya is the heart and soul of Eastland Bungalow’s flourishing fields. With hands calloused from years of coaxing life from the soil, he lovingly oversees the paddy fields, ensuring they sway golden and full under his watchful care. His connection to the land runs deep, rooted in tradition and nurtured by a quiet wisdom that only time can teach.

At dawn, as the mist rises over the fields, Kumara begins his morning milk runs. With the first light of day, he guides the cattle with a gentle hand, ensuring the bungalow is graced with fresh, creamy milk that adds to its simple, wholesome charm.

Just beyond the rice fields, Nimal pours his energy into the bungalow’s vibrant vegetable gardens. His days are spent amidst the leafy greens and delicate beans, tending each plant with precision and patience. The gardens flourish under his touch, yielding a bounty that reflects his steadfast commitment to the earth.

Together, Kiri, Nimal and Kumara weave the rhythm of a busy day at Eastland Bungalow. Each task, no matter how small, is a testament to their devotion—a harmonious blend of hard work and love that keeps the bungalow alive, vibrant, and deeply rooted in the land it calls home.

Sri Lankan Rice and Curry is a vibrant and flavorful staple of Sri Lankan cuisine, celebrated for its variety and balance. At its heart is a generous serving of steamed rice, accompanied by a selection of curries that feature vegetables, lentils, and meats like chicken, fish or pork. Each curry is distinct, with bold flavors crafted from coconut milk, spices like cinnamon, turmeric, and curry leaves, and often a touch of tanginess from tamarind or lime. Side dishes, such as sambols, pickles, and papadums, add layers of texture and spice, making this meal a sensory feast that reflects the rich culinary heritage of Sri Lanka.
Here at Eastland nothing beats a good rice and curry with freshly handpicked vegetables from our greenhouse. This dish compliments the cold weather and makes a hearty meal for anyone up here in the cozy mountains.
