Sigiriya is one of the popular tourist destination due to its unique identity. It is located in central province of Sri Lanka. Locals referred it as the 8th wonder of the world and also it is considered as one of the best examples for ancient urban planning. Literally Sigiriya is a large rock with a lion carved into it. There is an ancient kingdom on the top of the rock. It was recognised as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1982AD.
There is an interesting story behind this rock. Sigiriya was built by King Kashayapa who ruled from 477 CE-495 CE and his life was full of controversy as he was born to non-royal concubine. So, he rebelled against his father King Dhatusena by imprisoning him and eventually he killed his father by entombing him in a wall. He selected this place as his royal residence as he worried about potential attacks from his brother who was the rightful heir to the throne.
It has very advanced and impressive hydraulic system consists of lakes, dams, fountains, and underground water pumps which still provides water and also this place carries archaeological importance as well. Sigiriya is well known for following features.
1. Frescoes β There are paintings which covered the most of the western part of the rock. Those ladies depicted in the paintings are known as βApsarasβ
2. The Gardens β There are three distinct gardens and they are well linked with each other. They are Water gardens, terraced gardens, cave and boulder gardens.
3. The mirror wall β The king created the mirror wall which is highly polished so that he could see his reflection there. It is believed that its mirror like surface was achieved by using special plaster made up of fine lime, eggs, and honey and then the surface of the wall was then buffed to brilliant luster with beeswax,
