Wilpattu is the largest national park in Sri Lanka with an area of ​​130,000 hectares. It is also the oldest national park in the country which was closed after a few years due to armed conflicts. A few decades ago, Wilpattu was more famous for its tiger population than Yala. A unique feature of Wilpattu National Park is that the entire park is dotted with large sandy natural lakes known as "Willis". Villus collect rainwater and attract wildlife especially during droughts.

The main attractions of Wilpattu are the leopard and the sloth bear. It is one of the better parks to see barking deer. Wilpattu is bordered by 2 major rivers to the north and south, Modara Gamaru to the north of the park and Kalaoya to the south of the park.

Wilpattu is famous not only for its wildlife but also for its archaeological and historical significance. It is believed that about 500 years before the birth of Christ, Prince Vijaya and his followers from India landed at a place called Thambapanni in the northwest corner of Wilpattu and established the Sinhalese Kingdom. There are still many archaeological ruins and stories about this and many other interesting historical events that took place within the borders of what we now call Wilpattu.
