Warm, clear waters in Indian Ocean around Sri Lanka favors the growth of coral reefs around Sri Lanka. There are hundreds of shallow patch reefs all around our country, but there are significant master pieces which attract the attention of millions of local and foreign reef lovers.

Coral reefs in Sri Lanka are belonged to fringing or patch reef class. Few of these reef systems are declared as marine sanctuaries, protected areas or national parks. Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary at Kalpitiya, Rumassala and Hikkaduwa Marine Sanctuaries at Galle and Pigeon Island National Park are the most visited coral reefs in Sri Lanka. Whale watching is perfect for your leisure time...

Sri Lanka a biological hot spot is enriched with 3 significant whale watching hot spots around the island. Dondra( down south Sri Lanka), Trincomalee (east coast) and Kalpitiya (North western coast) are the three. Sri Lankan marine mammel community is a hot topic among various marine biologists, so there were list of researches and quite a good set of literature has been published based on our oceanic ancestors.

These researches has proved that there are 27 species of cetaceans can be seen in Sri Lankan waters. s***m whale (Physeter macrocephalus), blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris), spotted dolphin
(S. attenuata) and striped dolphins (S. coeruleoalba) can be listed as most visited marine mammal species in Sri Lankan waters.

Admire the spirit of culture.

Sri Lanka is a country with a history of 2500 written evidence. Sri Lanka is a multi religious and multi ethnic country. Buddhism is the major religion of the community. The history of our country was twisted with Buddhism, so there are great architectural monuments which still express the proud history of Sri Lanka. There are lots of ancient Buddha statues, temples and monuments which you can visit, admire and damp your soul.

Climate of Sri Lanka

Temperature
Average temperature is 27.5 Celsius at the lowland ( 100-150 meters from the mean sea level) area, but temperature drops quickly with the increasing altitudes. In NuwaraEliya ( At 1800 meters above from mean sea level) average temperature is 15.9 Celsius. If a traveler travel from east coast to west coast across the central mountain range, he can experience hot, next cool and finally again hot environment, within a single day.

Rainfall
Average rainfall is between 900 mm to 5000 mm annually. Eastern coasts gets lesser average rainfall (900 mm) while western coast and western flank of central mountain range gets more rain (2500 mm). In special places like Yatiyantota, Deraniyagala and Watawala gets more rain as 5000 mm.

Wind
Southwest monsoon- during May to September
Northeast monsoon- during December to February
From May to September, southwest or summer monsoon brings heavy rains to western flank of central mountain range and to west coast of Sri Lanka. During this period, west coast gets rain, cloudy sky with turbulent sea areas. So, you should avoid travelling in west coast during summer monsoon. But you are warmly welcomed by the east coast of Sri Lanka with bright, shining skies. You should go there at that time. But......
December to February, north east or winter monsoon winds bring rain to east side of Sri Lanka. You will not be able to enjoy the east coast during these days. So, you can start your journey to west and south coast of Sri Lanka from October to February.

Wilderness of Sri Lanka.

Sinharaja world heritage site (11280 ha), Kanneliya-Dediyagala-Nakiyadeniya (KDN) reserve (10139 ha) and Knuckles conservation forest ( 21650 ha) are the main three wet zone protected forests. Also, there are 20 national parks declared by Department of Wild Life Conservation (DWLC) and most of these national parks are concentrated in dry zone of Sri Lanka. Yala, Wilpattu and Bundala are three of them.

In addition to these reserves, there are four natural reserves, three strict natural reserves and sixty three jungle corridors. Any where, you can experience the wilderness of Sri Lanka. We wish to point you to the right place.
